mystery diagnosis...

I don't come here much anymore...but someone on another forum made a post this morning that has awakened my morbid curiosity and now I just *have* to know the answer... They had to put their 6 year old dog down after it became suddenly ill. They took her to an e-vet but were told they could not use ...

Re: build a book list!

Thanks guys. Everything from the first order is in, and I read Calming Signals the first night. If you havn't read this book yet...do!!! Seriously... good, simple stuff. It's amazing all the tiny things our dogs do that are either misinterpreted, or missed completely by most people. I'm a couple cha...

Re: Fleas and Babies

Anti bacterial dish soap kills fleas better than any flea shampoo I've ever tried. However, with any shampoo, it only kills the fleas on the dog at the time of the bath. As soon as you set the pup down, fleas in your house or outside will jump right back on him. Considering fleas lay their eggs OFF ...

Re: build a book list!

I think I'm gonna go with this: Diploma of Canine Behavior Science and Technology (Dip.CBST) http://www.casinstitute.com/dipcbst.html It's significantly cheaper than ABC's program...though it doesn't include books (because it uses REAL books instead of photocopied binders). It also does not include ...

Re: build a book list!

CASI is your best resource for online education. The professors there are highly acedemically educated in behavioral science and experianced, and have wonderful cirriculums and diploma programs. ABC is rather haphazzard and really has no official training method they teach. It all depends on who yo...

build a book list!

I'm about to start my education in training and behaviour in ernest. So far, my knowledge is based on sources provided by, or linked to on this forum, a few books I read years ago, lots of experience working around all kinds of animals, and a "knack" for reading an animal's behaviors. Sinc...

Re: To crate or not to crate??

It's always a good idea to have a crate, and get the dog used to it as routine even if you don't intend to keep him shut up in it frequently. You never know when you might need the dog to be in a crate. If you keep it set up in your house, like next to your bed or in your living room, it becomes the...

Re: walking two pits

also the two dogs would often attack each other when there was a situation which made them react. It was actually the non- DA dog who would do damage. many a times Ripple, the APBT, would end up with a big bloody gash on her head. It would take all of 2 seconds and both dogs would be back to their ...

Re: American Bull Dog traits

The things you are describing don't sound like "breed traits" of any breed, but more like common all-breed temperment "malfunctions". I tend to not think that any dog with a truelly stable temperment will behave like that under normal circumstances. That's not to say your dog mig...

Re: Fencing help?

Hot wire is a single electrified metal strand that can be run along the fence at any height. If your dog squeezes through the bars, I would put it at about his chest height. It needs to be plugged in somewhere, but most houses have at least one outdoor outlet. You can find these at most feed and far...
