Re: Who's used Proin?

My 12 year old dog Mocha has been on Proin since she was about 2 or 3 years old. My vet initially prescribed 50 mg once a day (Mocha weighs 40-45 pounds), but there were some unpleasant side effects at that dosage. She seemed very anxious and restless. So I dropped her down to 25 mg a day which was ...

Re: Cancer and supliments?

When my chocolate lab had lymphoma we kept her on a low-carb diet (mostly grain-free kibble, sometimes home cooked meals with meat/egg protein and pureed green veggies), and supplemented with Omega-3. I can't say for sure how much it helped, because she was also receiving chemotherapy, but she manag...

Re: Lymphoma

I'm so glad she seems to be responding well to the treatments and is feeling good! Best of luck for a continued and lengthy remission. I just noticed you're in Lafayette. Y'all be safe if that storm comes our way (I'm in BR and watching closely!)

Re: Lymphoma

Pipersmom - In terms of diet, when you're dealing with lymphoma and other cancers I learned it's very important to reduce sugars (complex carbohydrates). So at first I stopped feeding kibble altogether and switched to a home cooked diet high in protein and low in carbs. We fed Downie a lot of egg, g...

Re: Lymphoma

My chocolate lab, Downie, was diagnosed with lymphoma when she was about 10 years old. Several rounds of chemo, diet changes, and supplements gave us an extra two years with her (almost all of it, except for the last few weeks, at a high quality of life). I am still grateful for every second of that...

Re: TTA surgery for Riley - tips?

Thanks for the responses! Riley's surgery went very well, and she came home this morning her typical happy, wiggly self (toned down just a notch or two). Charlotte, I'm glad you mentioned the cone b/c it reminded me that the last time Riley had stitches and staples she managed to tear them all out, ...

TTA surgery for Riley - tips?

Riley is scheduled for an ACL repair (TTA procedure) on Wednesday. Not sure exactly how the tear occurred, but she has had mild patellar luxation in the same knee for many years and (probably unwisely) has been allowed to jump on/off furniture. So I'm guessing a combo of degradation of tissues due t...

Re: Question about Dasuquin

I don't know how the ingredients compare with other brands, b/c I've never used anything other than Dasuquin (except Cosequin, which is the same company and I'm not sure they make anymore). But the stuff has always worked well for my dogs. I gave it regularly to my chocolate lab for several years wh...

Re: Thinkin' bout switchin' from Evo to Orijen

I've been very pleased with the Orijen fish formula. I have also fed Blue Wilderness (grain free) formulas in the last year, and my dogs have done well on it also. My girls are 10 years old so we do blood panels twice yearly and so far have seen no problems.

Re: My boy diagnosed with Lymphoma

In my experience with lymphoma, it will get to a point (and it sounds like you are already there) when the prednisone will not be enough. In order to prolong the dog's life for any real length of time, you will need chemotherapy. After a diagnosis of lymphoma, my senior lab was able to live 2 qualit...
