Re: OFFICIAL e-collar debate thread
"Pack leader" is such a ridiculous term. Why must we insist on dumbing animals down by assuming that they see us as pack leaders? They don't. They see us as resource providers. Withholding resources is a powerful way of communicating that we disprove of certain behaviours without resortin...

Re: OFFICIAL e-collar debate thread
What about ecollars on working dogs? Isn't that what the collar was invented for in the first place-to get dogs off of dangerous game? On the subject of bird dogs/hunting, here is the point of view of Robert Milner, a trainer who has trained lots of dogs to perform in the field with harsh methods t...

Re: Thyroid fun for everyone.
If it's better to just shell out for a Hemopet one, then I will. Not sure if you guys have any feedback on that... ? I do. If I think that clients need to check thyroid levels for behavior issues, I usually insist that they get their vets to send a blood sample to Hemopet and run more complete thyr...

Re: Severe Anxiety
We're doing one Prozac a day until her anxieties completely seem to dissipate. After that, we cycle through one more prescription of Prozac before weaning her off of it for two months. If her anxieties returned, back on the Prozac we go. I have a feeling she will just be a Prozac dog for the rest o...

Re: IMHA and ITP
Have a dog on daily Prednisone lower dosage and did not see any shivering, even with post hospitalization greater dosage (pancreatitis and other on going issues).
I am VERY happy about your pup's CBC! Hope things only go better from now on.

Re: Severe Anxiety
I don't want to dope her up on medications or have her be just a lump on the couch because of her medicine. I want her to have a good quality of life because as it stands her quality isn't the greatest. She spends a good 70-80% of her day panicking or having a meltdown because I'm not home. I want ...

Re: Zero Tolerance for Even One Bark?
It made me sad to see it squelched. Did you say anything at all? I did not. The woman (I've only known her a few months) had alluded to showing her shih tzu and I didn't know if in show circles that's how it's done, etc. What's a good thing to say--to convince, not to judge--in a case like that? Of...

Re: Zero Tolerance for Even One Bark?
It made me sad to see it squelched. Did you say anything at all? There isn't really any valid reason to grab a dog's mouth in the situation you described. All that the dog learned, and I am sure this is nothing new , is that his owner has this sudden aggressive behavior contingent to God knows what...

Re: Break Sticks & Usage
Addin: realized that my first reply is not clear. I think O'briens would be easier to use. PBRC sticks are good and im glad to have them, but the O'briens look lighter and less bulky/easier to handle. Sorry for lack of clarity. Good thing you clarified that, was not sure what you meat to say! I gav...

Re: IMHA and ITP
My experience with IMHA was devastating, but I am not going in details as I don't want to add negative thoughts. Dogs have recovered from IMHA, and I hope yours will be one as well. Hang in there. What's his PVC now?

Re: Break Sticks & Usage
Amie, there are some old videos in the sticky in the training part of the forum, not sure that is what you are looking for though. I don't know of any stats but, from experience that also involved also using a breaking stick on dogs I did not know personally, I can say that I have never been bitten....

Re: Toilet training issues
5 times is not nearly enough, for such a baby. Please read the article below .It gives guidelines on how to potty train and the amount of times a puppy should be taken to empty his/her bladder, related to age: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vmth/pdfs/Housetraining%20Your%20Puppy.pdf
