Re: Heartworm and the before test?. Should I?.

We have one at my clinic, but it's only good for 6 months, not a year. It's called ProHeart-6 (moxidectin) and it's distributed by Fort Dodge. I know they don't recommend HW positive dogs on it, though.

Re: Heartworm and the before test?. Should I?.

Yes, get the test done before giving him the prevention. It's important to know his HW status before starting any prevention/treatment protocol. I know in my clinic, we wouldn't give a dog the injectable HW prevention unless he tested negative. Not only is that the manufacturer's policy, but I belie...

Re: question for all the male owners out there

Blue is going to be 3 soon. He was neutered at 6 months and squats to pee in the yard. He does lift his leg, but rarely and only when we're out on a walk. He started doing it after he saw my friend's male Rottie mark a tree trunk this past summer.

Re: mysterious (?) lim

*Sorry for the DP.*

I just saw where you said the limp was worse yesterday. I would go back and talk to a different vet there. If there aren't any other vets at the office, go to another one. Something may have been missed at the last visit.

Re: mysterious (?) lim

Well, the ACL's are only in the rear legs, so you don't have to worry about that. Has the limp gotten better, worse, or stayed the same? How long ago was she injured? If the x-rays didn't show anything, then the vet probably ruled out broken bones and arthritis. Both show up on films. It may be a so...

Re: Looking for heartgard

Is there a reason you aren't geting the heartgard from your vet. This season my vet started carrying a generic heartgard (i forget the name off the top of my head) and it was cheaper than the heartgard. The generic is Tri-Heart Plus. It's distributed by Schering-Plough. I work at a vet's office, to...

I know this may be a long shot, since she has so many different allergies, but try to give her one zyrtec (cetirizine) a day and see how that works. The dermatologist (vet) here has been using it on skin allergic dogs for a while now and loves it! The only side effect is that it may not work. If it ...

If you have no intentions of breeding, then tell your friend to put her in a room where she can't escape, ASAP!

I am so sorry you had such a bad experience with the vet. Where I work, we call the owner immediately post-op to give him/her an update and to set up a time they can pick up. For the clinic not to do this is extremely unprofessional. At pick-up for a non-routine procedure, the doctor who did the sur...

Never, that's a surefire way to get worms if I ever heard one! Giardia often comes from stagnant water and is a pain to treat. Leptospirosis is another, and it's not as easy to treat, and is often fatal. Plus, we can get Lepto from our dogs. That's not a disease I want to have. I don't let Blue and...

As the incision heals, it will begin to itch more and more. I would keep the E-collar on her at night when you can't watch her, just in case. Not having her wear it during the day when you can keep an eye on her is fine, but when you can't, it's better to have it on and know she can't get to it than...

If Blue gets overheated in the future, you can cool him down faster by putting rubbing alcohol on his paws. When dogs overheat, they don't get enough oxygen. That is the main problem so they usually need to be put on O2 to recover if they are that bad off. Normal temperature for a dog is anywhere be...

The bumps on his chin are acne. It will go away if you want to use benzoyl peroxide wipes on it several times a day. You can get these at any drug store. The cephalexin works a lot faster, though, and is extremely effective at getting rid of chin acne on dogs. I believe the spasms in his legs are un...
