Re: agility question - directions

It took me so long to really understand what I am doing out there and it has been an up and down battle. I have challenges in the way I learn and see things that make it take a little longer for me and I have trained at two different schools, with different systems making things even more confusing....

Re: agility question - directions

So again I think this depends on your handling system, but it sounds to me like you need to do more circle/flat work. That's great because you don't need any equipment to do it! I probably wouldn't even be putting verbal cues on it - just work on teaching her to follow your body movements and move u...

Re: agility question - directions

For me, turning out of a tunnel is going to totally depend on where I am when I put my dog in and where I am going and how I help her to understand that. It also depends on what way the tunnel is curved and what my dog's natural line is. Can you describe the situation where you want her to turn a li...

Re: Unshakeable leash snaps

The scissor snaps fail quite often (the spring breaks). I've never had a scissor snap fail - weird. They are my favorite because I am handling multiple dogs and leashes and I find them easiest to use with one hand. While I wouldn't want them to fail, these aren't dogs that I'd have to panic about i...

Re: An agility share & a question

It sounds like your dog might be similar to mine. Mine throws a fit when I leave her in her crate in a new environment. It is a stress behavior and not the excited screaming because she wants to run agility. What I do is crate her in my car when that is appropriate, and I also always give her someth...

Re: Fast eating issues

I have had fast eater fosters and one of the things I have done that worked well was to put some of the meal inside a kong or even two kongs and then put them inside a big food bowl. They have to sort of work around the kongs and move them around to eat and then pick them up to get the rest of the f...

Re: How long until first agility trial?

Thank you!! Unfortunatly I live in a small town, the place where we train doesnt have any fun matches as far as I know You should suggest it to them! Not a match necessarily but run-throughs like Leslie is talking about. It would be a way for them to bring in some more money and it wouldn't have to...

Re: How long until first agility trial?

Do any of the schools in your area hold fun matches? That is another good way to get your feet wet in a trial situation but without the pressure of it being an actual trial. In fun matches you can bring treats in the ring, you can train in the ring and work on basically anything you want during your...

Re: Paradoxical reaction to Xanax (alprazolam)

Abner is on prozac too. I, like you, wanted to be able to use the xanax for those higher-anxiety producing things like vet visits and long road trips. Abner's reaction sounds really similar except he was also really sloppy in addition to being spazzy and loud and rude. I can totally understand being...

Re: Paradoxical reaction to Xanax (alprazolam)

Yes! I swear Abner and Button have a lot in common. Abner acts really weird on Xanax - anxious, whining, stumbling, like a drunk frat boy. I tried it a couple of times because the first time I tried it was post-surgery (knee) so I thought the other meds, pain and anesthesia might be affecting his re...

Re: Stop standing on my foot!

I have a dog that stands on my foot sometimes out and about in the world. He is a nervous dog that is very environmentally sensitive and I have always thought that it is a way for him to keep track of me while taking in the world around him - sort of like I am the secure anchor and if he is physical...
