Re: Petsmart Basic Puppy Training - Opinions?

We were considering Petsmart but didn't want someone with limited skills training us on how to handle a special type of dog. We're very lucky to have found the private trainer we have. She only takes about 10 dogs in each class, and the session runs 5 weeks, but includes some dog-free seminars. Ther...

Re: Tips for socializing/training puppies

Lucy has gone from Choke chain to chest harness to a "Snoot loop" - a gentle leader type of collar. She is the star attraction at class - well behaved and becoming an ambassador for the breed. The instructor discovered she was nervous around other dogs as she avoided eye contact and would ...

Re: Got a Mouthy Pup?

Lucy is mouthy in a different way. She licks my other dog, Brisco, in the mouth. Sometimes it happens when he comes to me for attention, other times it happens out of the blue. Is it a "passive-aggressive" action, or just affection?

Re: Tips for socializing/training puppies

Lucy has now started school. She had some basic training before we adopted her but she needs some fine-tuning, as do we. the instructor has 36 years experience and everything is built around positive reinforcement. The class is a mix of goolden retrievers, little wire terriers, a german shepherd mix...

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

Thanks. I saw her yesterday and we had a lovefest. She'll be home Monday and spoiled rotten. Looking forward to having her youthful enthusiasm around the house again

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

She has Coccidia, which apparently accounts for the runny poop at the start of the thread. I call the vet every day and they say she's doing well. No surprise, but she loves everyone, including the German Shepherd that's being boarded there. can't wait for Saturday when I get to see my girl again.

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

Thanks for asking. Oh Boy! Despite efforts to keep her calm, and away from Brisco, she managed to open up her incision. Most likely from her habit of crawling under our bed at night. She developed a rash so she went back to the vet who stapled her and is boarding her for 10 days to ensure she improv...

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

All done. She's home and healing, but she has what looks like a heat rash on her belly. Reaction to the rabies vaccination? My lovely wife is taking her to the vet Monday.

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

She's recovering nicely. So well, in fact, that this morning she pulled off and destroyed the inflatable collar she has been wearing since Monday evening. She was being so well behaved. I left the room for a few minutes and there it was hanging around her neck. This girl's an expensive date!

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

Well, she went in today. The vet said she was at the tail end of her heat. I figure at least 6 weeks. They were surprised but they said it would be safe to perform and were very conscientious about not doing damage. I haven't been home yet so I don't know how she's doing. My lovely wife went to pick...

Re: Tips for socializing/training puppies

She has a great time when we walk but sometimes she can be, how shall I put it, bloody-minded. She will lay on the grass and not budge. Sometimes she is Ok when we change directions but, because she is easily distracted by bugs, cars, and bikes, she resists, and I hate to tug on her.

Re: Tips for socializing/training puppies

Thank you for the advice. I love this forum. I tell everyone what a decent, caring crowd Pitbull people are and how wonderful the breed is, contrary to the misconception in the media.

Re:

Thank you so much for this. we adopted our dog at 10 months and changed his name. We have had him for 2 months. I am working with the pronged leash training supplied on this forum. I have taken him to an indoor play area off leash and he is not "coming" when called. He does come when we a...

Re: Puppy's first heat cycle

Conceivably she could be pregnant - if my boy's neutering wasn't 100%. He's the only male she has been in contact with. The Dobie over the back wall is female, and those are the only two dogs she has been in contact with. On the bright side, Lucy and my boy Brisco would produce beautiful pups. Not t...
