Re: Nail Trimming

Thank you for your experience. What do you suggest (besides steroids that will likely shorten his lifespan) to treat skin conditions more aggressively? I agree with MissKiwi although in some cases steroids can cause more harm than good. For example, Gabby had generalized demodex for about a year an...

Re: Nail Trimming

My boss uses a laser and a nerve blocker, under general anesthesia, and this method greatly reduces pain and stops bleeding immediately. We did it on a Rhodesian last month and he was up and walking within an hour. The nerve blocker is injected prior to surgery. He uses the laser for cat declaws als...

Re: Probiotics

I agree with Franster. Refrigerated stuff is higher quality. Remember that probiotics are living bacteria! Mine get the same that I use on myself and I also give them keifer or greek yogurt as a treat - if you're dog is dairy sensitive, just stick with the capsules.

Re: Nail Trimming

Your vet can trim then, under anesthesia, with a clipper or a laser. That's about it...sorry! We've done a few at my hospital for extreme cases. Pricey, but worth it in the long run...

Re: We just can't win...Ugh!!! (food despair)

I'm lucky that mine does not have gas...I think she farted once or twice in the 18 months I've had her...I owe that to BARF. I had Gabby on Blue Buffalo for a bit last year and she had GI upset with it too. When I do give her kibble, which is very rarely, she has Beneful. I've had the most luck with...

Re: Weight Gain Question

Afetr reading your posts - thank you! - I feel better. I think she just needs more excercise to get a bit more muscular. She started Shutzhund 4 months ago so maybe that'll work her out better. At home I do off-leash hiking - she's TERRIBLE on a leash! I posted something re: finding weight pull in m...

Re: Weight Gain Question

Here's one from the beginning of the summer (she's the one on the right obviously). I don't really have one showing her tone better.

Re: What do i do when my dog is choking?

Been there, done that! :)) The above info is great. When mine chokes I just open her mouth, reach in and pull it out and follow-up with a good drink of water. The coughing afterward is probably just irritation. I'm a vet tech and thankfully choking is not something we see too much in the hospital.

Weight Gain Question

My Pit just turned 2, is 52lbs, stands 18" at the shoulder, has a history of parvo and demodex and is on a "fairly" strict BARF diet. She eats 3 cups of food twice a day and has snacks whenever she can get them. My vet (my boss) says she is a perfect weight, yet I would like to see he...

Hello from NY

Hey! I am the proud mama of a 2 yr old Pit, Gabby, rescued from a dumpster when she was about 8 wks old. The police brought her into my job (I'm a vet tech) and she had parvo, demodex mange and was comatose. So...needless to say, she's sleeping on my bed now  She still struggles with mange...
