Re: Creating a Safe, Low-Stress Environment

That's a stellar idea! I don't expect to have guests too often, but I would love to chain "hear the doorbell/knock" with "go to place."

Re: Creating a Safe, Low-Stress Environment

He'll have his crate there, though I think he will have to be reaclimated to it due to some serious bungling on my and my family's part when we first got him (using the crate as punishment, uhhhhgh!). I would also like to get him a larger crate; I think he would be more comfortable. I just snagged a...

Creating a Safe, Low-Stress Environment

So, good news, moving Humphrey from the stressful, under-stimulating life of my parents' house to my new apartment in a few weeks. I really want to make sure he's as comfortable as possible in his new digs. It's a one bedroom, so I don't have a ton of space to work with. I'm thinking of using DAP di...

Re: People who make your dogs crazy

My gf's parents, who have apparently never experienced an actual dog in their lives (all their dogs have been very sweet, but essentially glorified furniture), get H as riled up as they can when they see him, and THEN try to calm him down. After that, they like to cast judgment on me for "not b...

Re: I don't know what to tittle this but... :(

I'm glad she's going to a behaviorist. And it's great that you're recognizing that the club is not the best place to be. As far as medication goes, here is a great series of posts on the subject: Part 1: http://reactivechampion.blogspot.com/2011/08/meds-and-your-dog-part-i-should-you.html" onclick="...

Re: I don't know what to tittle this but... :(

Okay, two things. 1. Behaviorist, along with maybe some medication. If you're not sure what to look for, I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction. 2. Next time, if Serenity has a freakout, you need to LEAVE. You need to get her out of the situation that she is uncomfortable with. D...

Re: Feeding Raw

How do people feel about dehydrated raw (artisan or honest kitchen) in the same meal or even day as kibble or raw meat? I am curious the process time for dehydrated foods. On that note has anyone tried grandma lucys Artisan? I'm considering this in conjunction with a raw diet. I have fed Honest Kit...

:goodpost:

I generally hate the current trend towards anti-intellectualism and anti-science... but this is one case where the "experts" are not always right.

He didn't breed the dog. He posted an explanation in the intro thread.

Re: PetSmart training

I disagree. It is "real obedience," there's hardly any tricks at all. I don't have the curriculum in front of me, but as I recall it's Watch Me, Sit, Down, Stay, Come, and loose leash walking, along with various husbandry and common behavior questions and answers (especially for the puppy ...

Re: PetSmart training

Sit in on a class. PetSmart trainers vary wildly on their experience. You should be able to tell right away whether they are truly passionate about training or if they are burned out and just going through the motions. While you are watching the class, don't just watch the trainer. Watch the other o...

Re: Hog Hunting--too dangerous for rescue dogs?

I know it doesn't mean instant death always. I am no expert on guns but wouldn't a elephant gun do the job? I don't mind using the dogs to find them. If they're in public areas they could be tranquilized then killed. :dunno: Yeah, but what if you miss? You're dead. We don't have wild hogs up here (...

Re: Could my dog be RACIST? Advice wanted.

As for the GR being attacked by the GSD, that means nothing being as dogs will attack other dogs regardless of their shape, size and color.. Umm... Not true. My mom's terrier mix was severely attacked by a brown cocker spaniel when he was a puppy and even now, 8 years later the dog HATES brown cock...

Re: Could my dog be RACIST? Advice wanted.

As for the GR being attacked by the GSD, that means nothing being as dogs will attack other dogs regardless of their shape, size and color. You can socialize them with as many dogs as you want and if they don't like the scent of just that one dog of feel its threatening, they will attack it. Um.......
