Harley stinks.

Seriously. I bathe this dog and 4 days later he smells like he crawled out of a lake. Or snuggled with my husband's work boots. As best we can tell, he's a pit bull catahoula cross... Erm... Could this be a breed thing? Reno never smells this bad. We use the same shampoo and conditioner on them, the...

Re: What is so wrong with grabbing a dog by the collar?

I've named Reno's collar just like any other body part or piece of equipment. He will offer it to me when he's wearing it if I ask, and will even help me find it if he isn't wearing it and I tell him what I'm looking for.

Comes in handy when attaching the leash! lol

Re: Pointing stick training?????????????

Outlaw Josey, the two finger target is very easy to teach... it's just getting the dog to touch their nose to your extended (together) pointer and middle fingers. (think of it as a fatter, shorter, incredibly portable target stick lol) Example : you touch their nose with your fingers, "X"....

Re: Pointing stick training?????????????

You can also use a cheap dowel rod from a hardware or craft store. When I start with mine, (I train using Bridge and Target) I hold the dowel as a part of my two finger target, then gradually extend, bridging as the dog shows interest. I would even tell the dog what you want - Reno, this ...

Re: Nail Trimming Video with Reno

It was pretty simple, really. I first tought Reno his paws by touching them, naming them (left paw, right paw) and ending with the terminal bridge - "X". (Literally, I say "X". lol It's a marker that tells Reno when he's done what I ask of him.) Once he understood what his paws w...

Re: Nail Trimming Video with Reno

Anything is possible - just takes a little work. I wish I had a "before" video of Reno. It's such a huge difference!

A video of Reno getting his nails trimmed:

Please excuse the dirty room, shaky video and ringing phone. I was all on my own and it was right before that room was rearranged. lol

Nail Trimming Video with Reno

Since this is a topic that has been brought up several times, and since I had a dog who was at one point intolerant of having his nails and paws handled, I wanted to post this. I've been meaning to share this for some time now, but had lost my uplink cable for my camera. I only did one nail for the ...

What is targeting...I have no clue? Naming and targeting... We have used Bridge and Target with fabulous success. Target = touch, basically. Targeting starts out small - holding out two fingers and marking when the dog touches. This communicates the idea of targeting. From there, you can expand to ...

Head shy issue - get him to target with his head, ears, eyes, lips, teeth, nose, bridge of nose, chin, nostrils...etc. Teach him to balance things on his head and nose. Use it as a part of NILIF and ask him for his eyes, ears, whatever before he eats. Have fun with it! Reno used to scream bloody mur...

Were they both on the couch?

If so, perhaps some *major* freedom restrictions are in order.
