Re: Pit Bull - Needs Home - Male - Dallas, TX

He can come here. We just need to figure out a way to get him from TX to northern New Mexico or S Colorado. I can drive down to Taos, Santa Fe, or Raton.

I am here:

Re: Pit Bull - Needs Home - Male - Dallas, TX

WTF? I offered to take the dog as a last resort weeks ago. I hope this guy gets someone to step up and help him out. Worse comes to worse, I have a kennel open. I dont think anyone is volunteering you. I was just hopeful and asking if it was still an option. I hope sit works out either way. Oh no, ...

Re: Leg leaning, forceful heeling

Is this the boy you were thinking of for SAR? or is this a different Mal?

Sorry, didn't have anything interesting to add since all the ideas I have were already put out there, but was wondering about that boy. :)

Re: Working on Recall - Suggestions

Wow! What a gorgeous place to be! Yes, building a recall is a way of life. You should be rewarding your dog every time she choses to come to you whether you asked her to or not. Over time returning to you will become almost a reflex but you have to work at it and be patient. Ideally your dog will be...

My friend swears by them for her bully and mal. I think they are basically the same as others, but I get better deals at work.

Re: Pit Bull won't play nice with other dogs...

Congrats on Taz's progess! Personally, I wouldn't tell him "bad" and I wouldn't give him a behavior that I want him to be solid on as a punishment (that is, I want my dogs to sit reliably, and I don't want them to think it means they're being punished each time I ask for it). When Lib is i...

Re: Working on Recall - Suggestions

Sure thing!

If you are planning on covering the whole property with him to practice recall in different setting I think you are totally on the right track.

Have fun on your vacation. I bet Bruce will be in heaven!

Re: Sleeping Solutions For Backpacking Dogs??

You can buy very nice dog beds for backpacking. I think REI carries some. Some are inflatable and some are super compact in compression sacks. I have used an inflatable one by Bison for a few years and it has held up nicely, plus the dogs can carry it in their own pack.

Re: Need help with Blu's behavior toward select strangers

I'd also steer away from the trainer you mentioned. Sounds scary at best. Working with a trainer who insists on dominating any dog (but especially a sensitive or fearful dog) is not in the best interests of your dog. I'd also like to mention that being in the actual exam room can be much more stress...

Re: Working on Recall - Suggestions

Building a rock solid recall takes a lot of time and proofing. However, you can build decent reliability fairly quickly. I think you are on the right track with starting out on a long line and treating liberally. I'm not sure I understand the idea of walking him all over the property. Are you trying...
