Submission to other dogs means weak nerves, and sensitivity. In the APBT I have a hard time seeing this as a good trait. Submission to a human is good to an extent. Submission should not be extreme shyness or urination. Weak nerves in a dog can also easily turn into fear biting and unpredictability....

thanks for your input. We had this happen at petco when an employee was apparently trying to troubleshoot/socialize an adult dog that Grimmy did not appreciate. She kept saying, O good, this dog is submissive, and felt it was the perfect situation to introduce the adult as Grimmy obviously would'nt...

I'm constantly building toy drive with Ginger becasue she was very lacking in the begining. I able to instill drive only after she started winning most every time. One of the keys in her case was to always leave her wanting more. Take the toy away when she was still wanting to play and she will wan...

thank you :) The next bite make sure you let him win BEFORE he gives up. And when he wins praise him verbally and physically by petting. i was very careful when we first started (maybe a year or two ago) to make sure that *I* always won because of the rules of tug that i think. also, my dog is very...

Sorry for the double post I forgot to add that in the begining the dog may drop the tug due to mouthing or insecurity. When the dog drops it either grab it quickly but smoothly or lead the dog away and tell him to leave it. Pick it up later. I start new dogs out with obedience and prey drive, and on...

Re: building drive in a low drive dog?
he loves to tug now, we're just starting, but he'll suddenly lose that crazy pittie look and sort of gives up- what gives? a bully who gives up? (i blame it on the hound in him.) When starting out I would read him very carefully on the tug. Also time how long it takes for him to give up th...

A friend of mine had an application on a rottweiler that she bottle raised and it beats all of the ones I have had on any of my foster dogs. "I am looking for another rottweiler because when the police did a drug raid they took my dogs away." lol At least this person was honest though, huh? lol It s...

lol that sounds like a riot! Are you going to send him to the WA K9 unit with Neville ;) Have you tried Natural Balance's Meat Rolls? They are pretty cheap, about $10 here for the large, and every dog I have used them on LOVES them. Plus they are a bit stinky and they are not sticky and slimy like h...

I have no problem with a dog sniffing as I go but if the dog is pulling or straining to go in another direction I simply say "leave it" and continue walking. I also don't let them do it excessively or the above mentioned ways because I don't want them to do it in a show ring, while we are working an...

I would recommend starting at home. Tie her up while you are outside working in the yard, or reading a book/magazine/newspaper etc... Start with short intervals and gradually make them longer. Do not recognize her until she sits and is quiet at first, and then let her off. Once she starts to pick up...

I have used prey drives in order to control the environmental prey. I used to incorporate a tug on my walks or while working a dog with stimuli. Basically just to teach the dog that the satisfaction comes from me playing with them and not the object that arouses them. After several times with this a...
