Re: the choke debate

depends on the dog in my experience. i have a very hardy dog who also happens to be pretty intense. when i first got her i used a choke but never orrered any corrections with it. if she wasnt in a heel she'd put pressure on her own neck. i eventually ditched that and went with a prong offering gentl...

Re: How to correct after dog takes a dump in house

simple solution: put the dog outside. wait till he poops. let him back in.

i have a foster right now that hates the rain. i follow this exact procedure and he is learning pretty quickly that he needs to produce something to get back in.

Re: Need a good vet in Centrak NJ

if you are willing to take the turnpike up to secaucus Dr. Hatch @ Secaucus Animal Hospital is awesome. my family has been going to him for years and we have thrown just about everything at him over the last few years between fosters and our own animals. he is really good about talking through treat...

looks good! I'd opt for a stainless steel quick link over that carabiner though. i used one of the ones from home depot and it didnt last very long.

Re: NSAIDS for Roscoe

depending on the severity of the condition there are more natural routes to take. for a mild case, i'd look into plain old wild salmon oil which has some anti-inflammatory qualities. on the flip side I personally know 5+ dogs that were on relatively regular doses of rimadyl for extended periods of t...

Re: I want some thick, chew proof, inexpensive collars!

i too swear by the stillwater collars but a 2" is just way too big for a small pup. they can sometimes look big on adult dogs. if they are going to grow out of a collar anyway then it doesnt really need to be too durable (or at least as durable as the stillwaters are). just my 2 cents.

for about $30-40, depending on your hardware choices, you can make 4-6 latigo leather collars. i use a drill instead of a hole punch and i use the rivets that you can secure with a hammer.

Re: Rainy Days and Mondays

sicily can get bored very easily, especially with intellectual games and brain teasers. we gave her a tug a jug once and she tore the top off of it like you or i would open a yogurt cup. physical exercise is really the only thing that will satisfy her. she uses the e-mill almost daily for anywhere f...

Re: Does my puppy like me?

Seems to me that he might have may have dominance issues. Its not that he doesnt like you. Maybe he was mistreated at his old home. As long as you spend time with him showing him youre the leader and you wont hurt him he'll be alright. whaaaa? some dogs are more aloof than others. in most cases my ...

Re: What supplies do you need to make collars?

i buy my stuff from Tandy. they are decent prices and ship pretty quickly. i have made a few passable latigo collars with a hammer, a drill and an old cutting board. i've never tooled or stitched any collars though.

thats a great article btw!

Re: Neutered or Natural?

also, i'm not sure how a vet would know what animals are roaming the streets. are they roaming into your office? maybe you have access to detailed information from the ACOs in your urban area but if not you have no grounds to discount the opinion of someone who does. The bleeding/dying/dead ones co...

you sound like you dont really want to hear what my experience is but i will tell you. i've spent nearly the last 2 years volunteering in the kennel and living with the director of operations for a municipal animal shelter that takes in 3,000 animals per year. i see just as many intact females come ...

You haven't seen FIRST HAND the vast number of intact males (both cats and dogs) hit by cars... says who?? just because you've been a vet for a few months does not mean the I dont see dogs hit by cars. Also remember you don't deal with John Q. Public every day... PBF is not an accurate representati...
