Re: Severely obese lab...

what is normal? Is he in hte middle of the range? On the low end of the 'normal' range? If he is on the low end of the normal range, you might try a very low dose of thyroid supplement, as the range is really a guideline. What might be "normal" for one dog may be hypothyroid for another do...

Re: Bleeding tail tip

You can go to the vet and have it wrapped, etc... but you can also first try this: Get a box full of those LARGE bandaids, shave the tip of his tail, and wrap the bandaid around the tail. Every time it comes off, put a new bandaid around the tip. Tauri recently (for the first time in 9 years) opened...

Re: Aaarg... he's FOUR... why now??

two tactics - boobie trap the trash can (motion-activated air sprayer, scat mat, etc.) I've actually tried both of these back when it was a minor issue... we have them for keeping the cats off the countertops. Sadly, they're more effective for the forgetful humans trying to go about their day than ...

Re: Aaarg... he's FOUR... why now??

two tactics - boobie trap the trash can (motion-activated air sprayer, scat mat, etc.) or get a different trash can that is tall and operated by a foot pedal. (prevention is half of dog training!) :) and...if your fiance forgets and there's a mess...make him clean it up (if that's not practical for ...

Re: Vets...or anyone: about raw and sanitation

Just ask the doc before surgery. I cannot imagine it poses anymore of a risk than you preparing raw chicken for dinner on the counter or general "doggie germs" from traipsing in and out. And then there are the nasty "people germs." Probably keeping some hand sanitizer by his bed ...

Re: Just got off 2 1/2 months of crate rest....

OOps. sorry. I must have skimmed over your last paragraph. I apologize for the double post. I would start slowly. If she's food motivated, have lots of treats and ask strangers to give her treats when they greet her (if she'll take them, she may not). You have to start her off in low stress situatio...

Re: Just got off 2 1/2 months of crate rest....

was she still relatively young when this happened? In my experience, a high percentage of young dogs that go through prolonged periods of crate rest develop fear issues that can take years to overcome--and sometimes are never fully resolved.

Re: the choke debate

I think alot of the problem with these "training tools" is the majority of people using them have no idea what they are doing. That is why you see people using choke chains without even the basic knowledge of what side they should be standing on to give the corrction (I'm probably explain...

Need foster home! Sacramento

We've lost a couple of foster homes recently, and we need to pick up some new ones, so I'm scouting for volunteers. In particular, we have a 10-12 week old Pit Bull or Pit Bull mix puppy that needs a home or a foster. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o66/chakodogs/tanwhitepup.jpg If interested ema...

Re: the choke debate

Like anything, they have their advantages and disadvantages. When used properly on the right dog, they are very effective and SAFE. When used improperly, they can cause damage. But there are disadvantages and advantages to the prong collar, halty, etc. So, every tool should be evaluated individually...
