Re: When does training turn to abuse?

Nagging a dog means - popping his collar or harness constantly or raising your voice at him as if he doesn't hear you (he does). Correction means e.g. - putting a prong collar on a dog improperly (too loose, too tight) and repeatedly giving corrections because you have failed to teach the dog WHY h...

Re: any remedy for salt water ingestion?

Hmm, I have no clue how long it takes for the heartworm pill to break down – do you dose her every four weeks or every six weeks? In my previous research on the subject, I seem to remember reading that it's ok if you miss a dose one month but if you go for several months without a dose, a heartworm ...

Re: Starting to worry about Dolly and the baby

Are baby gates not an option while you figure this out with the behaviorist? It really sounds like she needs to have space away from him and baby gates can give you some peace of mind in limiting how far Kael can roam now that he is so mobile. You've already acknowledged that Kael does stuff that ma...

Re: any remedy for salt water ingestion?

We always bring plenty of fresh water and a bowl for beach outings. As soon as Molly tries to drink the ocean, we get her water out for her. We also walk her afterwards (away from the beach) so that she can throw up/diarrhea if she needs to - this usually only happens on trips where she hasn't been ...

Re: Betsy

She looks like such a sweetheart! Does she like stuffie toys or kongs? Maybe she can be photographed while playing with a cute stuffed toy or working on a kong, that way she might be easier to photograph since she's preoccupied. Barring that, sleeping pictures on a comfy bed next with a stuffie next...

Re: Food suggestions for a dog with food allergies

If you want to try to figure out what food he is allergic to, you should stick to one food and no other treats, raw, supplements, etc. Go back and read MissKiwi's post, she is essentially recommending an elimination diet. I have done an abbreviated form of an elimination diet before with my dog (I d...

Betsy

Are you guys willing to adopt out to first-time pit bull owners? She sounds like she could be a fairly easy dog even for first-time dog owners in general. I realize that's risky but if placement is local or where it's easy to do follow up home checks, that might not be so bad. She sounds like she wo...

Good article on Anxiety/behavior Meds

Thanks for posting this - gives a really good overview of the various kinds of medications and nice to see the warning to not use acepromazine for anxiety/fear issues.

TTA surgery for Riley - tips?

Oh, I just remembered the other really important thing: for the places where we have wood and linoleum flooring, we put non-skid rug liners on the floor so that Molly wouldn't slip once she was able to walk around the house. I think it did help her and certainly gave me more peace of mind.

TTA surgery for Riley - tips?

Good wishes for a totally quiet, uneventful recovery and hugs to you - I know how hard it is to not worry about every little thing. Give Riley some smooches from me.

Re: Separation Anxiety Getting Worse

I'm not an expert and my dog never had full-blown separation anxiety but we did have to do some work with desensitizing her to our leaving a couple years ago when she was recovering from surgery. I do have some thoughts so here goes: since separation anxiety by itself already means he is super stres...

Re: TTA surgery for Riley - tips?

^^ Really good thread! Molly had different surgeries but I think the initial recovery needs (first 2 weeks until stitches/staples are removed) are pretty similar. We were never able to successfully crate train Molly so for confinement, we borrowed an X-pen rather than try to put her throu...

Re: Am Veterinary Med Assn ruling against Raw Pet Foods

The FDA does not support raw feeding, are you going to say they are also influenced by kibble makers? I think they are in the business of protecting people, and so far the studies are remarkably clear and repeatable about bacterial contamination and shedding. The day that the FDA takes on Monsanto ...
