Re: Am Veterinary Med Assn ruling against Raw Pet Foods

The FDA does not support raw feeding, are you going to say they are also influenced by kibble makers? I think they are in the business of protecting people, and so far the studies are remarkably clear and repeatable about bacterial contamination and shedding. The day that the FDA takes on Monsanto ...

Am Veterinary Med Assn ruling against Raw Pet Foods

El_EmDubya - totally agree with what you said above. I pester a friend of mine who is a microbiologist with questions here and there and in short, not all bacteria is bad. I don't feed raw but supplement Molly's kibble with things like kefir, raw honey, kelp, etc. Many vets give a blank stare as I g...

Plop, plop, poop

Do you give any supplements? Molly did fine on grizzly salmon oil for nine months and then had anal gland issues - as soon as I stopped the salmon oil, her gland issues went away. It was not an obvious culprit since she didn't have a problem with it for so many months but it did turn out to be the p...

Artemis Dog Food

That sounds like a reasonable plan - I always keep a close eye for the first week when switching foods and look at Molly's body condition to know if it's too much or too little. Due to her restricted activity and the kibble we feed her now, she gets less than a cup/meal so what you plan doesn't soun...

Re: Recall, Kirkland and Taste of the Wild

I switched away from TOTW last year - no recalls happened in that time frame that I recall but the cost kept going up on TOTW in my area and knowing that they were completely within the Diamond sourcing/manufacturing control, I felt like I could no longer trust that the near-premium price I was payi...

Re: Artemis Dog Food

Haven't tried Artemis but I was also going to recommend mixing some of the kibble with the canned to see if she can be tricked into eating the kibble. If she accepts that, then maybe very slowly shift the portions of canned vs kibble to more kibble. Sometimes it's a matter of helping them get used t...

Re: Joint supplements homework, please?

Savage Destiny Thank you! Sounds like it helped Riddle and the other supplements seem like they are quite effective too. I'm really glad your kitty got better, a friend of mine recently lost one of her cats to renal failure.

Re: Joint supplements homework, please?

Char - Our vet just recommended this to us as well. Franny's first day was Friday PM. We'll have to compare results. He also liked what we were doing nutritionally and her weight/exercise schedule. Maybe because we're going to the same place? ;) I have been meaning to thank you for the recommendati...

Re: Joint supplements homework, please?

At the recommendation of our acupuncturist, we are trying a different supplement for Molly right now. It is formulated for humans but this company does make veterinary supplements as well for small animals (dogs/cats) and horses. Diamond expanded it's recall after one sick cat, one sick care giver and two cats died at a shelter in Montreal after eating Diamond cat food. http://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/vet-breaking-news/2012/05/21/diamond-expands-recall-again-two-cats-dead.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return f...

Re: Glucosamine in treats, enough for arthritis?!

Dogswell makes the Happy Hips and I believe their ingredients are sourced in China. Something to note, most vitamins and minerals are sourced from China now too - I'm talking about anything you buy in a bottle for human consumption and any manufactured foods that have added vitamins and minerals (wh...

Dog food advice needed asap

NN is made by Diamond and since you are in CA, it will be coming from the plant in Lathrop, Ca which has not been involved in the salmonella contamination. It's not a food I would consider feeding my dog for various reasons but technically, it is "safe."
