Re: Training Scholarships...any opinions?

Thanks MissKitty, that's exactly the one I was thinking of! Unfortunately I'm not as rich as I'd like to be  so I can only start off a scholarship type thing, and my hope is that other people would be able to/want to donate also. With the nosework prize, do you know if it is totally privatel...

Training Scholarships...any opinions?

So this Christmas I actually have a little bit more money than I normally do...aside from getting nice gifts for friends I starting thinking about how I could donate some money to a good cause. Of course I always think of dog related causes and I started to wonder if there was a way I could donate t...

Re: Negative Reinforcement

There have been some really great discussions on this aspect of BAT...quickly gets very technical. But yes. many people do assert that it is -R. However I don't know really if I agree, although that might just be because I like BAT. It may be because BAT gives the dog a lot more opportunities to mak...

Re: Negative Reinforcement

Pushing down on a dog's butt until he sits? I have a really hard time separating positive punishment from negative reinforcement because in most cases at least SOMETHING is added to the dog in order to create the opportunity to take it away...so for example if you're using a shock collar to train a ...

Re: humping

While upping obedience may be helpful, humping is never about "dominance". I disagree. For some dogs, it certainly is. Could you explain how that would work? The ethological definition of "dominance" is “priority access to a preferred, limited resource.“ I am not sure how a dog ...

Re: humping

The fact is that I have never claimed that putting a dog in his crate is punishment. If a dog is chewing a power cord and you remove the cord and give him something else to do that you approve of, is that punishment? No. So then why is removing him from humping people and putting him in a crate whe...

Re: My puppy is too smart

OFten people will badmouth something that they don't truly understand. Trust me, clicker training is great. What you're looking for with your puppy is stimulus control:

Re: humping

Purely positive methods have their place. A dog who is unable to handle the 'stress' of being put in his crate for repeating an infraction he knows better than to do by deciding the crate is a 'bad thing' is weak nerved and unstable, in my opinion. I totally get your point in rewarding for good beh...

Re: humping

If the dog is humping you tell him NO and then engage him with a toy. If he continues to hump, tell him NO again and then put him away in the crate. If he's jumping on people and humping young children, next time people come over have him on a leash, every time he jumps up tell him NO and reward fo...

From people who attended the meeting, it was not a go. I'm not sure why various websites are reporting it did pass. I have asked for clarification.
