Re: Should we euthanize our pit bulls?

It's an emotional time for you guys but at some point you have to realize the situation you put the 4 dogs in was not safe, otherwise you wouldn't have a dead dog on your hands. Rosa started the fight and Toby and Blu finished it- which is typical for Pit Bulls. If you didn't suspect 'mental problem...

Re: Tucker doesn't like kibble ...

AURRRGH! I had a vet do that to me with Cash (the kitten) when she left a voice mail that sounded like the next sentence out of her mouth was going to be "three weeks to live" and then finished with "Lower Urinary Tract Disease. Okay, well, thanks and have a great day!" I will n...

Re: Breed Identification

Too confusing to potential adopters and your petfinder hits will plummet since people search dogs by breed. I would bet most people find your dogs online via Petfinder and not your website. If you're not sure, you can check your web stats. Also, how do tell someone they can't adopt that dog who prob...

Re: Pros/Cons for spaying 8 yr old?

I've had an ancient Chihuahua neutered, adenomas removed, perianal hernias fixed and then a 3rd surgery to fix nerve damage caused by the perianal hernia surgery. He did fine and he had significant CHF. We did spend 8 weeks getting his liver in better shape and curing his kennel cough but after that...

Re: We've decided Molly is officially "foster girl Molly"

I havn't heard anything back from any of the rescues I contacted. Giving it a few days. But I might end up needing some help with resources of my own to find her a good home! You probably won't. It's too much work to train a new volunteer who is coming in with their own dog and will very likely onl...

Re: Paradoxical reaction to Xanax (alprazolam)

Xanax is in the class of drugs called benzodiazepines. A very powerful and dangerous class of drugs that is way over prescribed and very abused. I personally believe that it should be outlawed, the medical benefits are out weighed by the consequences. In the case of your dog, the jump in dosage was...

Re: Question Regarding Shelters Partnering with Rescues

Thanks for the feedback. If anyone else has something to add in the future, please do so. I have an open request for partnership with a county HS in event of a large scale intake like a dog fighting bust or some such and am not sure how to handle it. Maybe contacting a lawyer is best but I'm not ev...

Re: Question Regarding Shelters Partnering with Rescues

The only way in which we partner with our local humane society is when we use their low cost spay/neuter clinic. They treat and charge us just like anybody else though. SPCA in our area is another private rescue just like us. We do sometimes take bottle baby kittens from them because they won't bott...

Re: Petella Luxation

I have a Chihuahua mix with 2 luxating patellas and 2 vets have told me not to do surgery unless he has pain. He doesn't have any pain right now so we're leaving them for now.

Re: Leaving a dog alone for 12+ hours

12 hours isn't that bad. He'll probably be fine. If he's not than he can train the dog to use pee pads. 12-24 hour shifts aren't uncommon and the dog will get plenty of attention on days off. For people appalled by it think of it this way. Most people are working a 36-40 hour week whether it's 5 eig...

Re: I dont know how you do it... But I know why.

Quite frankly, for many dogs and cats in shelters, the first time they do know cruelty, neglect and violence is in the shelter system. That shouldnt stop you from volunteering but pay close attention to what you see and don't be afraid to report anything.

Re: Favorite Names that are NOT over used!

Really? Where is that proven? It's not been my experience at all. Nathan Winograd had a source cited when I saw him talk last weekend. People don't want to split up the named pair and adopt a different kitten. When someone finally does split them up, the leftover kitten/puppy gets adopted soon afte...
