Re: mouth ulcer

Papillomas look like onions... if you google a picture do they look similar?
(They are not a harmful thing so don't freak out!)

Re: Happy Tail

That's super scary. :( Has the vet offered hospitalization or referral? It worries me that he considers this life threatening but is treating him outpatient without IV antibiotics, fluids, etc. (Please don't take this as any kind of a judgement... just wanted to make sure you guys were given all the...

Re: The consequences of anesthesia-free dental care

Yeah, I've seen vets do full anesthesia and still neglect to do radiographs. Not cool either way.

Re: mange

Mitacide just means something that kills mites. So any mange treatment would be a mitacide.
Anyway glad your dog is all better.

Re: mange

Do you mean mitaban (active ingredient amitraz)?
It's another common treatment for mange. Other than marking it up like any other product, vets don't get any particular benefit from selling it.

Amitraz and ivermectin can both have side effects at the doses used against demodex.

No one is going to be open to learning if they are getting "corrected" on stupid stuff like grammar and dog colors.
Can we just welcome someone to the forum without getting 100% judgmental?

Re: Personality change after spay?

It's not a silly question... there is a lot of research right now looking into behavior/hormones/sterilization. Nothing compelling enough to me to change my mind about the importance of spaying and neutering, but it's not entirely unfounded. We learned in vet school that an animal's calorie requirem...

Re: Personality change after spay?

Anesthesia is low-risk for most dogs, and pre-anesthetic bloodwork really helps. Anesthesia is less about the drugs and more about the level of care and monitoring during the procedure. Ask things like... Will she have an IV catheter in place during the procedure? (should be yes) Will she be intubat...

Re: Looking for some rescue resources in nj

Check out Street Tails Animal Rescue in Philly - they are a great rescue group specializing in animals with extra medical needs. They get most of their dogs from ACCT, our animal control and adoption facility here. You can also keep an eye on the Philly Urgents page on facebook (ACCT dogs), or conta...

Re: Bump?

Lymphangiectasia actually means dilated lymphatic vessels... so I'm assuming he means a small lymphatic vessel in that part of the skin would be clogged and unable to drain lymph away.
Like Allison said it can happen in the intestines too but that doesn't sound like what's going on with your dog.

Re: TICK EMERGENCY!!!

Frontline is fipronil, not permethrin. If I were you I'd be careful about telling people on the internet to feed or apply garlic and tea tree oil to their pets, since it is well known that they are toxic to dogs - especially since they are not dosed by weight like commercial flea products are. http:...

Re: Underweight diabetic

If I were you I would look for an Internal Medicine specialist vet and then possibly a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. If there is a vet school near you they will have those services, or you can look up a vet specialty center near you. It may be that the diabetes is not well regulated or th...
