Re: TRAINING CERTAIN BEHAVIOR

You could just teach the dog to bark on command ("speak") and that way it wouldn't be teaching the dog to bark AT people (which could encourage actual, dangerous aggression), but would be enough to scare off anybody thinking about bothering you.

Re: PLEASE HELP SAVE A LIFE. ♥

That sounds like a really tough situation. I think it's awesome that your son rescued this dog and is trying to help him. I think there are 2 things that need to be addressed - both the immediate safety for your dog/house, but also the dog's state of mind that is causing him to act this way. A conta...

Re: New dog with allergies?

The thing with a food allergy is it can take up to 12 weeks after starting the correct food for the allergy symptoms to go away. I agree with you that not all vets are savvy with skin issues but I would not count on diet changes making a difference fast enough to stop the problem from getting out of...

Re: New dog with allergies?

I would start with a vet visit because often there is a component of infection when they get really bad allergies. They can also talk through options like short-term steroids, a hypoallergenic diet trial, and the various antihistamines to target the allergies themselves.

Papillomas look like onions... if you google a picture do they look similar?
(They are not a harmful thing so don't freak out!)

Re: Happy Tail

That's super scary. :( Has the vet offered hospitalization or referral? It worries me that he considers this life threatening but is treating him outpatient without IV antibiotics, fluids, etc. (Please don't take this as any kind of a judgement... just wanted to make sure you guys were given all the...

Re: The consequences of anesthesia-free dental care

Yeah, I've seen vets do full anesthesia and still neglect to do radiographs. Not cool either way.

Re: CGC for Reactive Dog?

I did the CGC with my GF's dog who is dog-reactive and she did great. It helped her a lot that we went through a CGC class beforehand and that the tester-dog was completely neutral and not interested in her. The CGC is a test of you as much as it is a test of the dog. You even have to sign a pledge ...

Re: mange

Mitacide just means something that kills mites. So any mange treatment would be a mitacide.
Anyway glad your dog is all better.

Re: mange

Do you mean mitaban (active ingredient amitraz)?
It's another common treatment for mange. Other than marking it up like any other product, vets don't get any particular benefit from selling it.

Amitraz and ivermectin can both have side effects at the doses used against demodex.

For the peroxide mix, it will last longer if you keep it in a light-proof spray bottle!

No one is going to be open to learning if they are getting "corrected" on stupid stuff like grammar and dog colors.
Can we just welcome someone to the forum without getting 100% judgmental?

Re: Personality change after spay?

It's not a silly question... there is a lot of research right now looking into behavior/hormones/sterilization. Nothing compelling enough to me to change my mind about the importance of spaying and neutering, but it's not entirely unfounded. We learned in vet school that an animal's calorie requirem...

Re: Personality change after spay?

Anesthesia is low-risk for most dogs, and pre-anesthetic bloodwork really helps. Anesthesia is less about the drugs and more about the level of care and monitoring during the procedure. Ask things like... Will she have an IV catheter in place during the procedure? (should be yes) Will she be intubat...
