Re: When does training turn to abuse?

Training is abuse when you have to either repeat yourself constantly, nag at the dog, or give the same correction over and over again. The different 'levels' of abuse are clear. Nagging a dog isn't nearly as bad as beating him with a 2x4, but if you don't get the results you were looking for the FIR...

Re: Training the ALERT on k9 nose work

Also, in K9 Nose Work (the specific sport) it's highly discouraged to give ANY obedience commands once the dog starts the game. Yesterday I went and got a few identical boxes, put food in one, and let her figure out why the boxes were there and suddenly she found the food and was overjoyed. The enti...

Re: Training the ALERT on k9 nose work

I am joining a class, but they only have one every 6 weeks, and I've got three weeks left before the next one starts! I'll be working on locating treats in a box in the meantime so alerting to it isn't really required.

Training the ALERT on k9 nose work

I ordered a scent kit (with the appropriate oils to train a dog to alert to) but would like some advice on how to train a dog to actually alert. This is not something I've attempted yet. My idea is to reward the dog for indicating the box, and then not reward the dog for indicating the box and wait ...

I fail to see why you even asked this. Combative questions (and yes it comes off as combative) about people's reasons for not neutering their dogs is not going to change minds.

Re: Plop, plop, poop

If the beef idea is such a bad thing, why has it worked for me?

Re: Plop, plop, poop

I really have no idea why it works, just that it has for me and a few different dogs. Maybe 4 or 5 dogs, so not a large amount but I trust it! I've heard that boiling the hamburger can make it easier to digest for the dog if he has issues with beef, but I don't have any experience with it.

Re: Plop, plop, poop

Have you tried cooked hamburger? I've given it to dogs who have stomach issues and it 'dries' them right up to the point of being constipated (if you give them too much). I just mix in about 7 ounces for a 50 pound dog per feeding with the regular kibble, and then add some water until it's all float...

Re: Frank has started showing new behaviour (aggression?)

It's not surprising at all that you 6 month old dog is act like a 6month old dog. If you didn't know that dogs go through a 'teenager stage', you really need to read up on it, start implimenting nilif, and get him into some obedience classes.

Re: Victor Dog Food

There's only one local store that has it, and I paid $47 including tax for the grain-free joint health formula. The next closest store that has it is about an hour away, so I'm pretty happy with the price. We're still transitioning to it, so I can't say if I like it yet or not. Hopefully this is a g...

Re: help with pulling dog

No one is saying it doesn't "work". In my post I pointed out that it can and does work. The point is, that if you have two options to train a behaviour, and one is non-aversive and the other IS aversive, the humane thing to do is use the non-aversive option. If a trainer can only use aver...

Re: help with pulling dog

There should be no need ever for a front clip or head halter, either, but people use them as tools and, yes, as crutches when they don't phase them out and just rely on them to force the dog to behave. Everyone's got opinions on different tools to use on a dog, and I agree that positive training met...

Re: help with pulling dog

In my opinion prongs really shouldn't be used for pullers alone. There should be a flat collar on the dog and the prong should only be used to give corrections when she drives past you and walks in front when you don't want her to. Have you tried working on her staying next to you inside? Less distr...
