Re: Negative Reinforcement

Isn't BAT primarily NR? In that once the desired behavior is given the dog is allowed to move away or the trigger moves away. I should mention I haven't gone all that in-depth when it comes to BAT.

Re: Who trains for someone else? Who employs other trainers

I train for my mentor in addition to walking for a local company and walk/vacation care for my behavioral vet as well. Each place handles paying me a little differently. I also have my own walking/vacation/post-op care/training business. My mentor sometimes pays in cash, sometimes dinner. As of righ...

Re: My puppy is too smart

You just need to only reward when you've asked for the behavior. Unless you're shaping then reward towards what you want.

So say she offers a roll over, but you didn't ask for it. Ask for a different behavior she knows and reward that, then ask for the roll over and reward it.

Re: The Kitchen

I did/do boundary training. I have a rug that goes into the area that the stove, sink, dishwasher and counter space are in. As long as the toes stay off the mat they get rewarded. It makes a nice delination since lines are easy for dogs to see. The difference in the texture between the tile and they...

http://www.petprofessionalguild.com/FindPetProfessional

This site has references for only force free trainers. No choke, prong, or shock allowed.
That should take you right to the search page and you can put your location info in there.

I got to audit one with her this spring, just before her competition in Columbus. I learned a ton, she's really engaging and explains thing well, and if you don't get it she'll try another way.

Re: On one type of aggression and consultants

When we visited out Veterinary Behaviorist the above held true, except Wills issue is human fear aggression. So simply being in a room with a stranger or seeing them at a distance is enough to elicit the behavior. The day we had our evaluation was the worst response he'd ever had, and is still the w...

Re: PLEASE HELP...MAJOR ISSUES...need help ASAP

Went to the vet today...blood work was good, she got her vaccines she was due for and the doc prescribed her with some Clomiprimine ...25mg once a day for a week..then twice a day, then 3 times a day..then switch to 50mg once the first 42 pills are done...he also said to get some DAP stuff ASAP and...

Re: PLEASE HELP...MAJOR ISSUES...need help ASAP

I understand being against using medications. I won't use them for my own depression and anxiety, but my dog does get them. They have helped him so much. He's still Will, but he's a little calmer, things that used to terrify him now just make him uncomfortable. Medication alone does not work. You ha...

Re: Introducing to muzzle....?

You can't muzzle a dog while unattended and there isn't one that allows them to drink while wearing it. While I fully agree that you can't leave a dog unattended in a muzzle there are ones that will allow a dog to drink while wearing them. My boy has a basket muzzle (greyhound kennel muzzle) that h...

Re: At my wits end with this dog!

4 cups is a lot for TOTW. I feed my 70lb boy only 2 cups of TOTW a day. On the hooks and giardia, just because your other dogs aren't currently shedding doesn't mean that they don't have it or haven't been recently infected. Personally with giardia I'd do a full round of treatment for everyone. I'm ...

Re: Psycho Puppy!

Have you always or frequently gone from sit to down? This has been an issue for some of the puppy classes I've assisted with, where folks always went to down after asking for a sit and the pups just decided to skip the middle step. I'd go back to sit from square one and the same with down and work t...
