Re: Vibration Collar

There are a few vibration only collars on the market. Deafdogs.org even has a how-to guide on how to make your own with a remote control hot wheels car. It should be noted for those who are not aware, the usage of a vibration collar is not to be confused with shock or a shock collar on vibration set...

he does wear a e-collar but I only would ever use the vibration setting and I haven't had to use the setting at all for a while, it's on just in case.

While it seems we have no idea what led up to the bite in this case, there's a big difference between "manners" and a dog being failed and placed in a situation where they are forced to defend themselves.

Re: Dominating, non-affectionate puppy?

Think of it this way. If you are amped up playing a game with your friends and having a jolly good time, and someone comes along and bear hugs you and refuses to let go, is that going to calm you down? Are you going to be enjoying that physical contact? Or are you going to learn that every time that...

Odd behavior question

Neutering may help greatly, but here's a question: what is it about the behavior that bothers you? If he's choosing his humpy targets as inanimate objects such as a pillow, you can always put it on cue and give him his own pillow to go to town on. Humping, aside from the obvious boy hormones, is oft...

help with pulling dog

Ok, so it sounds like you've got a few things you want to work on: 1. Loose leash walking 2. Reactivity/over-arousal near other dogs and children 3. Recall 4. Impulse control amidst distractions What techniques have you tried for each and for how long? How specifically are you reinforcing behavior t...

help with pulling dog

Thanks for all of your help and great advice. I'm still working with her, but not seeing any progress. I thought there was some, but maybe she was just being super good those few days. I don't know what else to do with her. She's just bananas when she sees other dogs and it's like I don't exist at ...

Re: Introducing to muzzle....?

A muzzle is the last thing you'd want to do in this case. It will do nothing to change the underlying emotional response for the better, and everything to exacerbate the fear. Think of it this way: I'm terrified of spiders. Now let's say someone throws me in a room full of spiders. Naturally, I'm go...

Teaching toddler how to behave with the pibble?

Btw I WILL NOT spank the kid or the dog. So please accept my parenting choice and do not offer advice that includes slapping either of them. Thank you. Physical violence is never an acceptable action when working on modifying behavior, be it child, dog, or any other animal, so thank you for seeking...

Pet safety, first aid, and CPR

This seems to fit in the health section moreso than anywhere else. I was contacted a couple months ago to do a four-part series for the Seattle Times pet blog on various topics of pet safety & first aid. The first installment is published today and features Nichole's lovely miss Sadie! A new art...

Re: Animal Behavior College?

So, for the CPDT, the head trainer hours...does that have to be at a certain facility? Because there is a pet store here that has a small grooming salon that may be intrigued at the idea of starting a training class... Rather than focusing on the required hours, focus on getting a good educational ...
