Re: This seems like a crazy question to ask, but....

No way I'd ever trust a place that stated that nonsense as fact with my dog. Not a chance. Just because someone has 20 years of experiance, doesn't mean they have any understanding of animal behavior. Which this person clearly doesn't.

Recall, Kirkland and Taste of the Wild

I'm looking into Horizon's Pulsar line as well. There's a store near me that carries it, so I'm planning on picking up a bag tomorrow. I feel like the Legacy line might be overkill on the protein for my guy.

Re: Dog Throwing up

Is there a reason she's kept outside rather than inside? Do you not go out during the day to play with, exercise, or do any training with her? Have you considered moving her dog run since it's in a location with potentially hazzardous creatures?

Recall, Kirkland and Taste of the Wild

Any reccomendations for an equal substitute? Mine are on TOTW Salmon because of Curly Sue's allergy issues. A lot of my clients lately with allergy prone dogs have been feeding Orijen. I think it's quite a bit more pricey, though :( Jack's on TOTW Pacific Stream too, although our state nor product ...

Re: My 2 week "Give em a break" Journal

I kinda wanna give you a virtual hug. Your dedication to learning and wanting to do the best for your new pup is inspiring. If you are comfortable stating your general location, I'd be happy to suggest a training facility or two nearby that you could look into when you're ready to begin training wit...

Re: confidence boosters

Without time to go into much detail, anything involving free shaping and body awareness makes for a great confidence boosting exercise. What have you been working on so far?

Re: How to deal with extreme dog aggression

I agree that there isn't a way to train any animal using only positive reinforcement. But there certainly is a way to train using positive reinforcement and negative punishment. I do my best to not use positive punishment with my dog and I think that what most positive reinforcement trainers go for...

Creating a Safe, Low-Stress Environment

If its not a part of your training plan already, I'd work on teaching "go-to-mat" as well. It's a fun and easy shaping game that helps teach the dog to relax onto a specific location, and is a very handy behavior to have for teaching a dog to settle if/when you ever have guests over.

What is needed to be called a trainer?

No, anybody can call themself a trainer. Sarah is absolutely right. There are many certifications, titles, and memberships one can attain to prove their knowledge and experience as a trainer, but currently there is zero standard in the industry requiring any knowledge of animal behavior for one to ...

Hello from Boston

Might want to research the breed legislation in your area. I know the Boston area has a lot of restrictive laws (mandatory muzzling and the like) regarding the ownership of pit bull type dogs.

New pitbull owner, under odd circumstances.

Hope to learn a lot here, I'm sorry i didn't get a chance to research the breed before hand, it just kind of all fell in my lap. Truly, there is no need to apologize. These aren't exactly circumstances you could have planned for, and it sounds like you're doing the best you can to help this little ...
