Re: Trifexis -- how's it working out for you?

One of our adopters used it on a dog they adopted from us -- caused seizures and temporary blindness (thankfully only temporary).

Re: Saw this statement on FB today

The statement is gobbledeegook (coming from someone with an M.S. in biochemistry). While it is true many behaviorist theories aren't really based in true, hard science, many elements of dog training are based on scientific observations (i.e., Pavlov's experiment) that gave rise to the concept of cla...

Re: Trainers - what would you do?

I take it oral antianxiety medications or sedatives are out? Is the owner able to touch her with a stethoscope or syringe? Doing that might help the dog acclimate to those tools at home in a slow and gentle manner. Then the owner can work on having trusted friends help out with acclimating the dog i...

interesting, but I wasn't terribly impressed by the fox 40 video http://www.fox40.com/videobeta/b8886c9e-26ac-4bb3-ae76-d9a017b3ef92/News/Teaching-Your-Dog-How-to-Sign-Sean-Senechal" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It seems to be just teaching a dog to associate certain behaviors with ...

Re: Not a pit bull - American Bulldog

I'm sorry you had to make such a difficult decision, but I completely understand your desire not to place a dog that has proven unsafe around children. If more people were as responsible and thoughtful as you, there would be far fewer headlines and, ultimately, many more lives (dogs and humans) save...

Also that COULD be a symptom of a low thyroid -- but that's just a big maybe.

Have you taken him back? He needs to have that looked at and the wound closed.

Re: X rays prior to adopting?

My GSD rescue friend does that -- but the potential adopters pay for it if they want it. So, yes, if you want your dog to be active and you're concerned about hips or elbows, a good rescue will, in my opinion, have the dog x -rayed for you IF You pay for it. They might balk at the idea of anesthesia...

Good post, Sarah. I read all three pages of this and have to say I find this discussion interesting (and a couple of times even a tiny bit absurd) in the twists and turns it has taken.

Re: My dog hates raspberries!

I had a dog that would get hyperexcitable over that (not liking it) and I started making softer raspberry noises (very soft at first) and treating the dog every time I made the sound (the second I made the sound, I simultaneously gave the treat). Then gradually made the sound slightly louder...and l...
