Re: Treats on BARF Diet

I do! I even use kibble as low reward treats. It's cheaper and with the amount they get I feel better than them getting an equivalent amount in hot dogs, cheese, or other typical training treat. For when a higher reward is needed, like when I'm redirecting their attention from another dog or rewardi...

Re: New Pitbull Owners :) Seeking advice

Your dog is adorable!! And I second what someone else said about putting up a privacy fence or solid barrier so he can't see your neighbors dogs. That's just asking too much of him and its detrimental to his training in so many ways!

Re: A Few Questions

Should I try to have him become her "alpha" and try to earn her trust by becoming her calm and assertive leader? Or give it time? She loves him, they play together and she will try to snuggle with him, but doesn't totally trust him. God, please please do not do this! The last thing a dog ...

Staring!

So Angel's reactivity to other dogs is a constant work in progress. I suspect its mainly leash related but can't confirm that as I haven't let him loose around other dogs in over a year. I just don't trust him as he shows no tendancy to back away from conflict. The dogs that he has been off leash wi...

Re: Hog Hunting--too dangerous for rescue dogs?

Bluntly, euthanizing the cats would probably be a better solution, people just don't want to do it. Hogs are tremendously destructive to the environment and native species, tremendously dangerous to humans and domestic animals, and tremendously fertile. This is not a good combination. There are pro...

Re: Hog Hunting--too dangerous for rescue dogs?

I'm not against hunting, even hunting with dogs as log as its done ethically, but letting multiple dogs loose on a penned pig is animal abuse and is no better than using a dog as a bait dog. Yes, wild hogs are a serious problem and their populations need to be controlled but animal abuse is not the ...

Re: Veterinary Behavorists, Behavior Consultants etc

I'd like to add something about the "trainers"...please do your homework, before you end up with a business where the "trainers" learned to be trainers yesterday, are uneducated, have no background in dog behavior whatsoever and slap an electric or a prong on your dog. Most peop...

Re: Raw For Training Treats?

I use Freshpet Vital Dog Food, it is a refrigerated roll that I cute into tiny cubes. Apollo would spit out a hotdog for the stuff. I've seen those in the grocery store. I'll sometimes use the Natural Balance rolls cut up into small pieces. Goona have to try this though. Are they hard like the NB o...

Re: Raw For Training Treats?

Yeah, I would not use raw when training. I'm not obsessed with germs and salmonella but that's pushing it. I use hot dogs or commercial dog treats. I use the dried liver occasionally but I think if you use it all the time that ends up being way too much liver. They do love it though.

Re: "Dogs need by products"-Vet

IMO it does not. The domestic dog we know today evolved due to the incredible genetic diversity of wolves but just because an animal can survive long enough to reproduce on a given diet does not mean it is "thriving" on said diet. You mean like wolves do? The ones that live long enough to...

Re: Re:

(I must say that tarantula is delicious when roasted over an open fire.) That horrifies me. What is the texture like? SHRIMP, on the BBQ :mmm: But the best were when the females had eggs...if you like fish roe...well...tarantula is MUCH better. So how does one eat a spider? Do you get rid of ...

Re: "Dogs need by products"-Vet

If you could provide the studies/science behind the differences in their digestive systems and dietary requirements I would be genuinely interested in seeing them. (I'm not saying that to be snarky, I really am curious!) There are no studies that say that because a dogs digestive system is identica...

Re: OFFICIAL e-collar debate thread

i get what your saying, i guess all scientist have spent parts of their lives trying to understand what it means to be the "top dog" with a group of dogs. scientists also say there is no god, and religion is fake. but well over half the world believe and are blessed by god, and their pray...

Re: Snow's Hips have improved

Yay, that's great! Angel has all kinds of conformational deformities and while on the surface he's a good looking dog, a trained eye can see all kinds of stuff wrong with him. He was also diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia as a puppy and it has improved a lot as he's grown. He was started off on gluc...
