Hello from Michigan!

Postby N8swifey » Mon Mar 02, 2009 10:14 pm

Hello All!

My husband just joined a couple of days ago and I fell in love with the forum when he started to show it off to me, so I've decided to join. I'm sorry ahead of time for those of you who saw his pictures and read his post as I may repeat him.

My name is Sarah and I'm 23 years old. My husband, Nate, and I were married last May and have known each other since High School. My husband just graduated with his bachelors of music and I am currently finishing up my masters in social work. Hobbies are limited because of grad school, but I love being with my husband, walking our dog, being with family, enjoying warm weather, puzzles, soccer, and swimming.

We both grew up with pets our whole lives and are very passionate about shelter dogs. Since we are in an apt, we held off adopting a dog for quite awhile after we married (and it was hard :))!). The beginning of December we agreed we could swing an adoption because we both had 3 weeks off. Apt living doesn't intimidate us as we know that exercise is key to a healthy, balanced dog. Soon after we decided we adopted Missy, a shepherd mix from our local shelter. Here is her picture:

<a><img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/SaraiB/Missy/DSC01986.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Sadly, we only had Missy 5 weeks when we found out why she was constantly sick. An x-ray revealed a congenital stomach defect. At that point she was so ill there was no guarantee of quality of life, her stomach had been pulled up into her esophagus. We had to make the hardest decision of our lives and put her down. It was a hard couple of weeks, but we knew as we grieved that Missy would have wanted us to share our love with another dog.

We searched the web and looked into a local rescue. We were battling odds as we live in an apt and the rescue agencies were very skeptical. We finally found a pit bull pup on the web that was staying with a foster family. She was found at 6 weeks walking around in the cold by herself (poor girl). We went to the foster to meet her and it was love at first sight! Her original name was Daisy, but we renamed her Suzuki (Zuki is what we call her).

Zuki is now 13 weeks old and wonderful. We loved how attentive and submissive she was when we met her. Her attentiveness has made learning commands easy and she is the sweetest dog. She loves to cuddle and is learning to walk on her leash. The shelter said she was a mix, but her looks make us believe she's closer to a pure bred than previously thought. No matter, what's important is that we are responsible owners. Needless to say, we are ready to be ambassadors for the breed. As a social worker I am used to being an advocate for other people, the passion is the same for these dogs. Punish the deed, not the breed.

We've already been socializing her with many dogs and people. She seems to love people and enjoys being with other dogs. We have a cat, Rocket, who will put up with just about anything. Zuki is still a little too rough with him, but Rocket always comes back for more.

And here's what you've all been waiting for, PICTURES :))

When we brought her home, what a snuggler!

Thanks for all the welcomes!! And for all the comments on Missy, she was a great girl :-)

Srg Tibbs does look like Rocket! Rocket was the first pet that Nate and I got together. He has quite the personality, totally loves being around everyone. We laugh about how we'll never have another cat like him! Here's another pic of him!

We don't normally dress our pets up, but we bought this sweatshirt for Zuki when we first got her because she HATED going out in the snow and we were desperate. We naturally tried it on Rocket first HAHA

My husband just took a video of Zuki today doing her commands, I can't wait to share it with everyone!
