while im waiting i have a question

Postby ivywinon » Thu Jan 01, 2015 11:36 pm

We purchased a beautiful pit bull female with a good lineage. We learned after we bought her that 5 out of 11 of the pups from her litter were cleft palates. Is her DNA messed up to breed?
She is papered 6 generation pedigree and has good parents. Would people be worried about breeding her?
Sincerely,
Ivy and josh

I am going to be very honest with you- this board is more about rescue and supporting the breed in the current state which means breeding only the VERY VERY best of the breed by qualified experienced breeders and only then rarely. These dogs are overbred beyond belief and SO many killed in shelters every year.

Here is a chart that may help you reflect:

Here is another good perspective:

Having said all that I would love to see pictures of your pup and welcome to the forum!

and yes I think the cleft palate in so many of the puppies is a major concern. were the parent's health tested? have they been shown, or been in performance activities (weight pull, agility) - are they exceptional examples of the breed? these are some of the questions to ask when considering breeding. also you do not know how she is going to turn out yet.
