Hi from Maryland!!!!

Postby ProudBullyMom » Sun Aug 12, 2007 1:10 pm

Hi, my name is Tania, I live in PG County, Maryland.
I've been directly involved with Pit Bulls for only the last few years. I've been around them for years- other people's. When my sister in NY rescued her AmStaff, Dixie (about 5-6yrs ago), she educated me a lot about pitbulls & I fell in love w/ the breed.
I now have 2 dogs, Diva (just turned 1 in May) & Buddha (8 months). I got my first pitbull, Diva, when she was only 5wks old. My boyfriend met some guy who just wanted to get rid of her. She shouldn't even have been away from her mom yet. The day he came home w/ her was June 26th of last year, which also is the birthdate of my son, Manny, who diedwhen he was 4 in a car accident. How could I not fall in love w/ this puppy. I was so sad that day and she just came right in & put a smile on my face. So sweet & smart. Housebroken by the time she was 7wks old!
I want to own Pit Bulls because I think they're great, loyal, loving, goofy animals...and they're so misunderstood! It feels like I am constantly defending the breed, as soon as people find out I have pitbulls. We have done so much research & educated so many people....mostly by them coming & meeting the dogs. We have friends in their 50s who've been afraid of dogs their whole lives, now considering adopting a PITBULL! I think the best thing we all can do is be good, responsible owners & try to help debunk the negative myths behind this wonderful breed. There is BSL in my area & I think it's horrible. I have met some people in my area who are actively involved in trying to lift the ban.
We love to take Diva & Buddha to the lake near our house & let them run around, jump in the water, catch frisbees & balls...they love it there.

Diva...after she managed to sneak back up on the bed w/o me noticing lol

These pics are a few months old...I'll be getting more on here soon...

Here are my 2 two legged kids....

Naeemah is 8 & an aspiring chef already...rather watch food network than
cartoons. She already dreams of having her own restaurant in the French Quarter in New Orleans, where their dad's side of the family is from & they travel to w/ him a lot.
here she is @ 6 flags...that little white spot on her forehead was fom mommy dinging her in the head w/ the curling iron....poor thing. I felt sooo bad. Note the curliness of my hair...i haven't had much practice w/ hot curling irons...she understood...but i still felt horrible :o(
<a><img src="http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/cubanmami_74/naeemah.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
<a><img src="http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/cubanmami_74/naeemah2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
Here she is...going to the father-daughter dance w/ her daddy.

Elijah will be 7 in December. Ruff little guy...with a great BIG heart(and smile lol)...& he LOVES his momma :o)

<a><img src="http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/cubanmami_74/6flags_kids.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
Not understanding why i look so mad in this pic...i'm thinkin it was the sun in my eyes..i dunno.
<a><img src="http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/cubanmami_74/Naeemah_Elijah.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

I mentioned earlier I lost my son, Manny, in a car accident. That happened in 1996...when he was only 4. I can't bear to talk about my kids without speaking of him. He would've been 15 this past June & I still miss him every minute of every day. This pic was taken in Cape Cod only 1 week before the accident.
<a><img src="http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/cubanmami_74/manny2.gif" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Anyhooba...there ya have it...me in a nutshell.

You wanted more info...you're probably sorry u asked now huh lol
I know i probably got a little carried away...but o well.

I am trying to, in the near future, start a pitbull rescue. I realize this will probably take some time to establish. There's a lot I need to do. I have been doing a lot of research & networking. If anyone has any info that you think can be helpful...please let me know.

It's nice meeting all of u...
Tania

Welcome to the forum.

Well since I know you are aware of the BSL in your area, are you aware that you are taking a huge risk of keeping them in PG county. They are illegal to own period. If you get caught with the dogs, they will take them.

Yes, I was under the impression that pit bulls were not allowed in PG County unless they were grandfathered/registered before the ban went into affect.

Yea, I'm aware of the BSL in PG. But where I live is really like the outskirts of PG...furthest away from DC. PG county is huge. That law got passed a few yrs back becuz of the dogfighting problems boiling over from DC into southern PG county. I'mon the northernmost end of PG. The town I live in they really don't enforce it apparently becuz u see pitbulls everywhere...with responsible owners. One of the women on the home owners association one day saw me w/ Diva & approached me. I got a little worried for a sec...until she told me she has one too. There's at least 7 or 8 right near my house. She knows some people on the city council & she's been working w/ them to try to get something done about the BSL.
I am also looking for farm property now..outside of PG..in any of the bordering counties... I am starting a rescue...
So we shouldn't be in this house too much longer.
But regardless of how long it takes...rest assured..anybody comes to my house for my dogs..they're gonna be taking me w/ them. I will NOT allow them to be put down...that's not gonna happen. If u knew me personally u'd know i'm not joking. I adore these animals like my kids...and I will protect them w/ my life..same way I know they would me. If that means running out of the house w/ them & staying In a motel til we find another house...so be it! It would probably suck & be unconfortable cuz we're use to a 3-level house...but oh well...rather be a little uncomfortable for a coupla weeks than have to hear my kids crying themselves to sleep every night over their brother n sister (that's what they call themlol)

I understand your concern...we didn't plan on getting these dogs...they seemed to just land in our laps..at the time i was considering getting a yorkie lol...i definately didn't think i'd end up w/ 2...but once they were here...I just knew there was no one who would care for them the way we do...they are spoiled rotten! I knew sending them anywhere else there was no telling how they'd end up...becuz of their breed.
It just happens to suck that we are on the end of Laurel that happens to be PG county... there are 4 counties in Laurel...That's why I think they dont really enforce the ban out here...they are everywhere...but u never hear about one getting taken away. Only time I ever hear about Any dog being taken away...was after biting a kid or someone else's dog...or a dog that had already bit a few times and was deemed a menace.
but we asked around about the pitbull ban out here to some other pitbull owners and they all say they worry about it too but that the cops don't bother you...just keep your animals out of trouble & you're fine.

LOL that's ok...and thanx for the compliment :)
n ya know what? The fact that your mind shifted gears just proves that you have a real love for this breed. A lot of people aren't concerned about their own animals well-being, nevermind anyone else's...I'm the same way. That would've probably been the first thing i said too...
Nice meeting u
Tania

That's true...that's why I'm in the process of getting out of PG county...I'm surrounded by 3 other counties that don't have the ban.
Looking for farm property outside of PG now.
