Collar Width suggestions

Postby haircrazie016 » Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:27 am

I am trying to put together my first collar mania order :))

getting one for my dog will be easy cus shes small... but I would also like to send one to a past foster of mine...

shes a big girl! Her new momma keeps her a bit on the chunky side :\ I think the collar she has on looks so tiny on her neck and was thinking something bigger would look much nicer but would 2 inches be too much? also I dont have her exact neck size but I figured a large was the norm? can anyone vouch for that?

thanks

2" collars look good on a thicker dog like the one in the photo and are more practical and easier on the dogs neck.

2" would look good. All of my collars are 2", even on my teeny-tiny Bumper.

I find it's not to much the width that makes the collar too much for smaller dogs, but the thickness. Lisa's collars are very durable without being 1/4" thick.

Likewise, I have a few thick, padded collars that are too much on my 90 pound foster lol

You might be better off calling them and asking them what her neck measures.. I made the mistake of ordering a large for my first one and it was too big.... my dogs both wore 20" collars from the pet store but that is equal to a Medium at collarmania... you can also order one that doesn't have a buckle but a slider that way it will be sure to fit... ( i just did that for a christmas pres).. and from the looks of her pic 2" would look great! hope that helps :)

I think 1 1/2 or 2" would work well on her. Looking at the pic I am going to guess her neck size is about and 18-19", but if you can get her exact size that would be better. If you cannot get the exact size then get a collar with an adjustable bukckle type so there is a small margin for error.

Huckabee's Christmas present actually arrived in the mail last night-a 1.5" size large collar mania collar. She is 52lbs and has not filled out yet at 9 3/4 months old. I seem to remember he neck being 19 inches. The collar width looks perfect on her at 1.5" but a wider one might be better for a girthier older dog. The size large does seem a bit big but I told Lisa that she was still growing so she made it with room to grow I think. Not sure if any of this actually helps...

I'm a fan of the 1.5" collars on anything but a large, large dog. Just personal preference. They're big, solid, attractive collars, without looking too "bulky" or overdone. I have seen 2" collars I definitely like, but personally, I'd say 1.5" (I don't think you can go wrong either way, though.)

I like 2" collars, here's my two in 2" collarmania, both dogs are about 48 pounds so smaller than your girl

I like the 2" collars on big dogs myself. I have 2" collars on the 2 pit bulls, 1.5" collars on my average sized border collies (30-40lbs) and 1" collars on my smaller border collies (under 30lbs). I spend a lot of money on nice collars for my gang so I am of the opinion that they better be SEEN even through all of that border collie fur.

Thanks everyone so much for your replies! GoingPostal are both of them 2in? the red and black one looks smaller, but perfect for the size I want for Molly, is that 2in or 1.5?

Thanks again everyone! :peace:

Both are 2", Nero does have a 1.5" also, probably not the best size shot since he is closer to the camera but all I have, I still like the 1.5" but prefer the bigger
