Favorite winter doggie clothes?

Postby LizIs » Fri Oct 12, 2012 8:05 pm

My boy LOVES wearing sweaters in the winter. He's a major heat seeker and as soon as autumn rolls around he's a little ball of shivers until spring.

Currently Boss has 2 "on-the-go hoodies" by Petrageous, as well as a cable-knit sweater by the same company. We've been very happy with them, but he is a bit rough on clothes and his sweater has a few tears in it. I'm going to buy him at least one or two more for this winter.

I just wanted to see if there are any certain brands/styles other APBT owners have come across that fit particularly well, are durable, easy to wash, etc. The stuff he has is a teeny bit tight in the chest, but not overly.

Ruffwear jackets have been the only ones I've tried that Riddle hasn't annihilated within a month.

I picked up a Ruff Wear "Cloud Chaser" the other day. The jacket itself doesn't feel substantial, but I think the fit and finish should make it every bit as warm and far more comfortable compared to a puffier loose fitting jacket. I've been working ourdoors in winter for 7 years now and have learned that voids in insulation make the layers less effective unless you are looking to vent sweat from base layers (which dogs won't have a need to do). I plan to do a review once Iris gets a chance to wear it more, but it probably won't be for another month at least (it's too warm outside yet).

I've wanted some Zolawear playsuits for my crew for ages. http://zolawear.com/playsuits.htm

We got a Columbia dog jacket and it is WONDERFUL. Just form fitting enough and the zippers are not in stress points either. Nice work on their part.

I love Hurtta Collection dog clothes (and other stuff they have too):

Quite expensive, but very durable and high quality.

Yes! And they finally have distributors in the US! I'm trying to decide which one to get for Molly :)

Molly also has two coats from RC Pets (Whistler Zipline) which work great for her since it only rains here but she also has a fleece playsuit (I think it's a Zolawear) that has four legs.

Do dogs actually need winter clothes? I have never thought about it. Or is it more for an area were it gets really cold in winter?

Pit Bulls tend to get cold since they have such short fur and low body fat. My boy gets the shivers as soon as outdoor temps fall below 60. But my little dogs typically don't need any clothing unless it gets down near freezing.

I found these awesome costs for the dogs last year at my local pet/tack store-- they were cheap but super durable and warm and practical! I have to look at see who made them.

We'll be moving to Wyoming in a few months and neither one of our dogs has ever experienced winter. I've been told the winters in WY can be rough (this is probably especially true for us, coming from HI).

From what I've read, it seems the wind in WY is what really chills. For you folks in windy, cold places- what type of winter sweaters/jackets do you recommend?

So far, the Hurtta Waterproof Fleece Jacket is the only jacket I've seen that mentions protection from wind:

I've heard good things about Ruffwear dog coats, the Cloud Chaser is a SoftShell jacket which protects from the wind:

Thanks, Enigma - I'll look into that.
