Scare of my life!!

Postby Murfins » Fri Aug 29, 2008 3:47 pm

Please bare with me for this post as I'm running on no sleep and a total basket case with worry.

Last night I stayed up really, really late reading in a recliner chair, with Ellie sleeping on my leg under the blanket. When I was ready to go to bed, I do as I always do and softly said, "Ellie, let's go to bed", while I lift the blanket. No response - not really unusual. Again I said, "Ellie, let's go to bed" - nothing. So I gently touched her side - nothing. I slid my hand under her ribs to give her a nudge - NOTHING. She didn't move and didn't appear to be breathing and her eyes were open!! I picked her up and she was TOTALLY limp in my hand, I mean TOTALLY limp!!! I gave her a shake and still nothing. OMG she's dead! I put her on the ottoman in front of me and nothing and I freaked, I don't know why but I gave her side a fairly hard push and screamed for Terry (who was upstairs asleep). When I screamed she sort of moved and then let out this little half woof/bark. I screamed and screamed for Terry and by the time he got down here, she was okay and was barking. WTF!?!?!

My dog was NOT breathing. She WAS totally lifeless. I thought she was dead!!

She saw the vet immediately and he ran bloodwork and urine analysis and we are waiting for the results (tomorrow likely they'll be back). All her vital signs were good, she has nothing wrong with her that he can see. He doesn't want to speculate but is worried, I can tell.

So, I have no idea what is wrong with my girl or if it was a freak thing that will never happen again or what, but I am freaked out. I sit here starring at her breathing while she sleeps.

The only thing Terry and I can think of is that Ellie has a collapsing trachea and wonder if it was like a sort of sleep apnea coma thing that people can go into. I don't know!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep Ellie in your thoughts and send her all the positive thoughts you can that she is going to be okay.

I'll update when I find anything more out.

Well the results are back and everything is normal, except her urine shows very early stages of crystals, but that would have nothing to do with her "episode".

So, we don't know.

Our vet said that it could be narcolepsy, but that is extremely rare and her "episode" was not triggered by excitement (which it seems is often the case with narcolepsy) and it has never happened before.

So, yeah. We really don't know anything.

I know that can be looked at as good but it is also disappointing in that I really hoped to have some sort of answer. All the matters to me though is Ellie's well being.

Thank you for all the good thoughts. Ellie has been totally her normal, happy self, so I am very thankful. :)
