Why do dogs eat wood?

Postby Angela Adams » Fri Oct 03, 2008 2:48 pm

Anyone know my dogs love to eat wood chips and branches from my trees?

I wish I knew too! Chloe loves ANY wood: branches, trees, furniture, baseboard, etc.

My two only try to eat things like wood chips and branches when their stomachs are upset :dunno:

I don't know. We just got back from Japan, and there are lots of old trees in my mom's yard. Sticks are their new favorite toys. At least they are cheaply entertained. lol

haha yeah. i don't see why it would be anymore complex than that. it may be though, what do i know.

its probably a nice texture for them. kind of soft, kind of crunchy.

same reason we bite pencils probably.

Chewing is a stress relief/comfort as much as anything.
If a dog is teething it will chew on ANYTHING.
If a dog is bored, it will chew.
But mostly, "because they can" is as good of answer as any of the above.

Jasper likes to chew occasionally, but doesn't go out of his way to.
Whereas Cyrus goes berserk when a log/branch/twig is found! Or rather did, when he got to walk around without a muzzle. Mind you he still tries, and that in itself is a funny sight!

Maybe they're part beavers?

Regardless of whether they love it or not, the only thing that should be eating wood is termites. Don't let them do it.
