Not sure if i should be alarmed....?

Postby JenLeigh » Sun Dec 07, 2008 3:18 pm

so this morning Finn and i were having our usual sunday morning snuggles in my bed. he's allowed up on days i don't have to work and get to sleep in, so this morning was one of em. he gets up and shuffles into his lil tucked up ball for a while, then eventually stretches all his legs out and lays sprawled. around this time i got all playful n was rubbin him down and pokin him n tuggin on his legs. the usual.

but when i was rubbin his belly i noticed that at the base of his penis there was a big lump. so i poked it a little to see if he'd react and he didnt. im sure it's not causing him any discomfort, but i've never seen it before. it's right at the base and it's about the size of a regular bouncy ball. and it's very hard.

he's neutered, so im not sure if it's his leftover testicles?? or what. but like i said, i know pretty much every inch of my dog, he's incredibly tolerant and it was one of the first things i started doing to him, touching him and tugging him all over so he'd be used to a check up. and i've never seen this before.

so i'm wondering if it's normal for males? to have that at the base of their penis? or if i should get it checked out by a vet.

It is probably the bulb, the part that swells during mating to keep the male "tied", or locked into to the female.
Perfectly normal and I'm sure it's gone by now.

thanks!! definately takes away my panic. haha. first thing i thought was oh crap, lump.

but one thing i have noticed today is when he's lying curled up, there's no lump...but when i get him on his side, or back, there it is again. is that what happens with the bulb???

WELL...it's not always...swollen. Um. Think of male anatomy in general.

it's there when he's not excited too. basicly from what i can guess from just noticing today, is that when he's on his back, i can feel the lump. but when he isnt...it's not there?

Solomon's bulb is always swollen because he is always excited lol
It's totally normal (not to be excited all the time like my crazy dog, but the bulb) LOL

Tristan's was really huge the other day and Jeff said "I hope his prostate gland is OK!!!" He thought it was the prostate!
I had to remind HIM that it's just the bulb, lol and he's been around dogs his whole life!
We don't always see our boys' but some dogs have it more than others just like some boys have their *ahem* business showing all the time!

Your dog was excited - the bulb is the beginning of an erection. lol

Ok so I would have been just as concerned, but after reading everything, I'm good to know my dog has a bulb, and it comes and goes with excitement..
