shampoo, which do you use? and heartworm prevention?

Postby mrmspanama » Mon Jan 05, 2009 8:07 pm

we own Leo, he's a 23 month old APBT

we've had Leo since he was 9 weeks old, we've always used Hartz brand from walmart, it's been fine, but we're aware it isn't any high quality shampoo or anything to help him healthwise so we want to change it

Leo got his first hot spot last week... we've heard is very common in pitbulls, he's doing much better, it is drying out real good, we've been using diluted apple cider vinegar by spraying it on the spot and on his food so he can also cure from the inside out

Leo eats Wellness Core

he's a very healthy dog, he's our one and only and we'll do everything for his best

another question is which heartworm prevention do you use for your dog(s)? we give Leo Heartgard

I will probably get scolded for this, but I use Johnson and Johnson's baby shampoo for all of my pets, but they dont get bathed very often (every 6 months if that), only when excessively dirty... or when I want them to not smell like stinky aminals.. (so when they are dirty, cant help but love the smell of baby shampoo.. mm)

We use the same stuff I use on me, Dr. Bronner bar soap. No real smell but rinses nice. Nice and gentle for the twice a month bath we do.

I'm partial to Earthbath and HyLyt shampoos.

Heartgard is a perfectly good heartworm preventative assuming you use it correctly. It's the only product I've ever used with my dogs (in major mosquito country) and we've never had problems.

Same shampoo I use on me (my dogs might get bathed 4 times per year) Mane & Tail. 1% ivermectin @ 1/10cc per 10lbs of body weight for HWP.

I do brush them every day - and oft times I hose them down with clear water if they are muddy, but I tend to bathe with soap and water only when they are REALLY dirty - or stinky. And being raw fed, they really have very, very little doggie BO.

Shampoo:
We use Perfect Coat Natural Oatmeal. The perfect coat brand works really well on our dogs and make their coats nice and shiny. During, the summer and spring(tick and flea months) we use SENTRY® Oatmeal Flea & Tick or Natural Chemistry De Flea. We only bath our dogs at the most once every month but, we usually bath them, unless they get dirty, every 2-3 months. I am actually bathing all of the dachshunds today! :D

Heartworm prevention:

Interceptor

Flea and tick prevention:

Frontline and Happy Jacks flea and tick spray.

Also, we used to buy our shampoo at our vet office but they no longer carry the medicated shampoo for dogs we used.
