Going back to kibble :(

Postby Maryellen » Thu Feb 12, 2009 11:58 am

just cant afford raw right now.. it costs me $120 on a good month to feed all 3 dogs raw.. which is 120 lbs of food a month..

so its back to kibble , which sucks because jesse and ruby are allergic to storage mites, so i have to make sure i secure the dry food so that there are no mites... i am also going to sprinkle DE on the food too in the bins to try to help....

i am probably going to do DVP allergy foods, or find something that is cost effective.. right now i have a 4 lb bag of Solid Gold Wolf King i picked up yesterday to give to ruby and rufus to see how they do first, and i didnt want to spend money on a big bag and find out they wont eat it. so far ruby and rufus last night cleaned out their bowls on the kibble and did good, ruby didnt really scratch more then normal, so we will see. i put the 4 lbs in plastic tupperware containers to reduce the storage mites in the bag so hopefully it works.. once i find a food they can all have (which will be allergy formula) they will all eat the same thing..

i am leaning toward DVP Natural Balance Allergy food, they have a new type out called L.I.D. for limited ingredients .. the ingredients sound pretty good

i just have to make sure no food has any chicken egg or fat in it.

Hi Maryellen!

Can you microwave the food (even tho dry) or freeze it first to kill the mites..or are dead mites just as bad ???
(I myself really dont know, just thinking out loud!)

My dog Jack has bad allergies and it really is a struggle to keep him in good foods too.

We all need to win the lotto :frown:

Maryellen, if you look on the petco website, the prices are considerable lower than in the store, and I have seen that brand carried by them. My husband gets coupons from them for 10 percent off on a regular basis, I can always mail them up to you when they come, if that helps.

thanks all. i will probably go with the DVP and just give it to all 3 dogs

i would prefer grain free, but i cant because of the high protein and with rubys kidneys i cant feed high protein kibble..

i am going to do the lamb and venison ones from DVP, the ingredients are not that bad, and i just have to figure out a way to kill the storage mites.. i was thinking of letting it soak in hot water too, maybe that will work.

ME, keep us updated. I never heard of storage mites. I guess there is the potential for allergies in everything.

I have used Natural Balance for years and it works great for my 2..they are on the venison and sweet potato at the moment. All of them are limited ingredients, one protein one carbohydrate I believe..then all the other good stuff mixed in.

Bella is on natural balance, she also gets the fish and sweet potatoe. When the dr. thought she was allergic to food, she made us take her off of the duck because it too close to chicken, and we have stuck it since then.
