How often does your dog have access to water?

Postby bencodec » Thu Feb 12, 2009 1:55 pm

Hi there, i tried searching for this but can't seem to find an answer.

He had been giving charlie water at specific times a day (as that's what his previous owner had been doing) however i've read that many people leave water out all day for the dog.

the first time i tried this, charlie drank so much water the poor guy had to pee 27 times over a few hours. Now he seems to have that a little more under control however the accidents in the house have certainly increased (creating a fair amount of frustration for us).

How often are you giving your dog water and how often is he or she needing to walk?

a few times we have noticed that charlie has decided to have several small pees on his walk rather then 1 large one. is there anyway to work on this as it may be partly responsible for the accidents in the house?

I looked back to your intro. Your dog's a beauty :inlove:
Have you crate trained him?
To answer your question, my dogs have free access to water, and are potty trained. I let them out every 3-4 hrs if I'm home, but they can go 8-9 if needed.
You may need to give him access to frequent potty breaks until he gets it.

Constant access to water (except when crated, but that is generally only a few hours at a time).

Your dog should have free access to water.

constant access to water when mature enough to be reliably potty trained, except when crated. That being said, none of my dogs have had an issue with routinely drinking too much water.

Right...in my experience dogs drink as much water as they need...no more...no less.

Constant access 24/7. She essentially ends up drinking a bowl a day. However when I first got her she would drink A LOT and drink more like 2 bowls a day. I'm assuming she wasn't accustomed to the free choice water. Had a couple accidents at the 2 week mark, but since then no problems whatsoever.
