Help me please. My dog got bit by a mouse.

Postby Rivera » Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:06 am

There is a loose mouse running around in my house. And my 11 month old old dog went after it and the mouse bit my dog. Its a little bite mark. Nothing deep or anything.

Could my dog get a disease? Should I take my dog to the vet tomorrow? Or only if he shows abnormal signs. What things could my dog catch from getting bit by a mouse. I am so worried.

Is your dog UPT on shots and rabies? I think the most you would worry about would be infection. Be sure to wash the bite area out with even just soap and water and you can apply antibiotic ointments. If you see redness, swelling or if the ares feels "warm/hot" to the touch then it could be signs of infection. It would take a lil time before those signs show. All animals carry bacteria in there saliva and puncture wounds can push that bacteria deeper into the tissue. But since its just a wee lil bite mark just clean it good and keep applying ointment here and there for a while and then give him some cuddle time!! :)

It is very unusual for rodents to carry rabies, as typically, rabies is passed through a bite, and rodents don't usually survive the initial bite.
That's what the e-vet told me when I called about a scary beaver wandering in my yard at night. Really.

I was out in my barn, setting up horse feed and a mouse was stuck inside a bucket. I thought I could hold the end of his tail to get him out and he woudln't be able to reach/bite me-wrong, he did manage to bite me and draw blood.
I called the health department and the hospital e..r room, both told me not to worry about rabies, it is very unlikely a mouse would have rabies

Eh,
I'd be cautius about a beaver. They aren't tiny animals and could take a bite from a skunk/raccoon/fox and live.
A mouse, I wouldn't worry about.

*Cautious :huh?: My spelling skills are really going down the drain. lol

Dogs can get lepto from rodent urine, but I don't know about saliva - probably not. Especially if they've had the vaccine for it.
