Ella is sick :(

Postby chewbecca » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:33 am

Last week she had explosive diarrhea which she recovered from.

Then on Friday I noticed an increase in her eating grass out in the yard. I try to stop her from doing this, but I cannot keep her from getting every blade.

I switched her food last week to Orijen 6 Fresh Fish, but this isn't the first time she's had the food. She's had the food before (2 15 lb. bags in the past).

She ate her breakfast yesterday, but when I took her outside she ate some grass. She came back in and vomitted.

Ella has vomitted before, so I didn't think much of it.
Until she drank a TON of water last night. Then she went outside and threw it ALL up.
And she wouldn't eat ANYTHING last night, and she won't eat this morning.

Her poo is simply walnut sized, and it's only 1-2 walnut sized turds at a time.

We're putting a call into the vet in a few minutes. I don't know what else to do.
She's acting lethargic.

Poor Ella! I wonder if she got into something? Hope the vet visit finds out what the deal is and she starts feeling better.

Is your vet open on the weekend??
If not, you need to probably visit the ER vet - it sounds like a blockage quite possibly and if it's that, could kill her by the end of the day.

Her vet called us back within 2 minutes of calling them.

We took her temp; no fever.

She hasn't vomitted today, and her belly isn't distended.

She's not burping/belching, so he's not concerned about bloat just yet.
He said not to force anything on her during the day, but she needs to try and eat by tonight.
He wants us to try some chicken broth on her this afternoon, and if she eats that then we are to try 3 parts rice to one part burger meat this evening.

If she doesn't eat by tonight, we have to take her in first thing in the morning for an exam and xrays.

She hasn't vomited but she hasn't eaten...is she drinking??
If she's drinking, give her SIPS, don't let her gorge on water...

well, I would assume that if it was panrcreatitis, she probably would at least wince when we rubbed her tummy, wouldn't she?
Or would she? She welcomes our rubbing of her tummy.

Her gums are still nice looking.

And, yeah, no gorging of water. The vet told us that, too. He said allow her only to sip it a bit at a time.

Yeh I think her tummy might hurt if she had it. I don't know. Copper had it and all I know is his symptoms were just like hers.
Did she get into anything lately and over eat??

Well, I believe I might have overfed her one day last week.
But she got the diarrhea and it seemed like she recovered from it.
She was pooping fine, but she never did give up the grass eating.

And she wouldn't stop eating grass yesterday, and no amount of ANYTHING (even squeaking a toy!) could get her off of the grass, so I got frustrated, shut the door and went inside the house.
Two minutes later, my husband went out and brought her in. She wasn't out there for longer than two minutes, but apparently that was enough for her to eat a TON of grass.

I'm totally feeling like poop over this.
She's perking up a little. She's getting her ball, which she wouldn't even grab a toy yesterday at all after eating the grass.
And she ate a piece of her old kibble for me.
So, this afternoon, I'm going to try the chicken broth and see if she'll eat it.
I HOPE so.

Their eating grass isn't the cause, it is more of a symptom. She was eating grass because her tummy hurt...
Let's hope she continues to improve!

I hope Ella is feeling better soon!

Dogs eat grass when their stomach hurts when they are sick.

They usually do that to make themselves vomit.

but what would make her tummy hurt???
The change to Orijen??
But she's had Orijen before, I didn't think putting her back on it would cause issues.

We're going to do whatever we have to do to make her better.

Thanks, guys. :)

Ella is NOT a dog that rips up toys and eats pieces from them. She doesn't get into our garbage and eat things that she shouldn't.
This is what is baffling to me.

Personally, I wouldn't worry. Dogs vomit and often it's nothing. She could just have a bit of an upset tummy (again, doesn't mean anything is truly wrong - we all get the occasional upset stomachs). I've learned over the past 12+ years that this just happens and unless it is non-stop vomiting or accompanied by signs of pain (heavy panting, drooling, stomach is sensitive to touch) or blood, then give it a day or two. If she is vomiting more than once or twice, give her gastric system a break from food for 12-24 hours and limit the water, then start back with small meals and build up to her normal.

I hope Ella feels better soon.

It may be a bad bag of food.
Sounds like what happened to us a year or two ago- we got a bad bag of Timberwolf. We had no idea but it was the only time in her life that Lily did not instantly eat her kibble. Then she eventually ate it, and was sick, sick, sick. I would call the store you purchased the food from and ask if there had been any other complaints.

Feel better Ms. Ella! Sending all the kisses in the world your way. :))
