How do you exercise your dog?

Postby switters » Fri Nov 13, 2009 9:56 pm

In our ongoing exploration of whether a pittie is the right breed for us, I've been thinking about how we're going to exercise our dog. My habit with other dogs in the past, or with my friends' dogs that I've taken care of recently, was to go to a local park and throw the frisbee or ball until they were exhausted. Obviously that's not going to work with a PB, because they can't be off-leash in public areas.

Walks are the obvious choice, but I'm wondering what other safe activities we can do with our PB if we adopt one. I'd love to hear your ideas? We live in a fairly urban area.

Thanks for the tips! Some really great ideas in both posts. I feel encouraged.

you can also use a 50 foot long leash to exercise the dog with frisbee or ball so that the dog is not off leash

Khan is pretty easy. he loves fetch. So we play at least once every day rain or shine. If it is yucky outside in the yard we play in the house.

During the summer months we walk daily also.

He has really no interest in the spring pole I made for him or the flirt pole. I also made him a treadmill...I can't get him to use it :po: I am going to try and get an electric treadmill for he and I both...maybe he will use that, but I doubt it.

I think exercise depends on the dof too. Some need more than others. Mental exercise (training) also tires them out.

I'm sure it is probably suggested in one of the threads that are linked, but you can try and find a fenced in baseball feild or tennis court for running around. Just be careful in the tennis court, because it can tear up their pads and nails.

The bike attachments seem perfect for us. My wife and I rarely use a car anymore; we bike almost everywhere we need to go. I'm on my bike maybe 3-5 times a day. If I could take our dog on just one of these 20-30 min. round trips that's a good chunk of exercise each day. That doesn't sound hard at all.

Can anyone tell me what it means for your dog to be "over conditioned"?

I can tell you what it means to me, since I've done it.
I compete in weight pull w/my dog Soleil. Last year I competed a lot, w/out much in the way of breaks, probably from April until Oct. During that time I worked her several times a week most weeks. I kept her very lean. As a result, she spent most of the year in a highly conditioned state, only of lean muscle, no body fat. It was hard on her physically and mentally. I won't do it again.

Hmm. well mine doesn't pull weight, although that's something I'm looking into, he'd dig it. There's no strenuous exercise, just walking, running with a bicycle, some spring rope action, but nothing major. I wonder if there's another meaning.

I don't want to anthropomorphize but I would equate it to a boxer trying to remain in fight shape all the time.Rather than working hard for 6-8 weeks and peaking for a fight, trying to maintain that condition on a regular basis. It's working to the point of physical/mental burn out.

Walking, hiking, and fetch mostly. Finnigan likes to swim.
