Postby Siberian » Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:27 pm

I am now feeding raw patties (Nature variety), and Sheba started to drink A LOT. She also started to pee a lot.... sometimes in the house.... So, before I run to the vet screaming "Cushing's Disease", can the raw patties do that to her?

btw, she goes on and off those patties for the past year. When she is off, she is on Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw. Sometimes I mix the two. She had peeing issue about 6 months ago, very similar to what is happening now, and vet ruled out urinary infection. I am going to switch her to honest kitchen exclusively, just to see if anything changes, but still would love to hear some opinions.

actually I have always been told/heard they probably drink less on raw then kibble.
have you had any CGC done on her since she started this extra peeing/drinking?
the very leastn expensive way to go woudl be to take in a' first pee in the morning after a 12 hour fast from all food and all water water ' for a urine specific gravity test (that would tell you if kidneys were having problems too)

All my dogs and fosters who have eaten raw drink a lot less. So do my teammates dogs (7 herders and a terrier mix).

NV's patties aren't my favorite b/c they've got a lot of different things in them (plus Levi's allergic to poultry eggs). I do prefer Primal. But non of the ingredients should be causing a problem.

Maybe also give Pet Food Express a call and ask about any recalls? They are really on-top of those types of things.

I'd get her in for a pee test and probably take her off of NV and onto Honest Kitchen.

good luck! We'll be looking for updates.

This is what we feed our dog (well not the chicken formula, but all others) and he has never had problems. We actually just started him on the rotation diet they recommend which includes feeding him the kibble they offer and I have noticed when he eats that he does drink more.

So like pblove said, she should probably be drinking less on the raw, at least thats what our experience is.

ugh waht a dumb a@@ I am
I am sorry, I meant USG (urine specific gravity)
You have to take the urne into your vet to be tested
I have been doing a lot of these USG tests becaue I had a dog in renal failure and now have a dog with bladder cancer.
I pull food and water so it is at least a 12 hour overnight fast and then catch their first pee in the morning, drop it off at vets asap and they run the tests and call me with results, (cost about $40.00 here for the urine test)

I just rememberd one of the members on here(Bustersmama) fed the Nv patties and her dog started doing the same thing with excess drinking/peeing
It turned out to be 'struvite crystals' which her vet said it was from the raw/NV patties. She took her off the raw patties, fed her the prescription diet until it cleared up and has since been back on kibble and doing well.

I'm with the others - there is a WHOLE lot more water in raw than in most other foods we give them, so they tend to drink less. The crew here has been on raw for over two years, and when Liberty came, I forgot how much water she would need on kibble and kept forgetting to give her enough when she was in her room for the day.

Keep us updated.

Maryellen, anything else happened when they were on the patties? I am now thinking back... Sheba has been scratching herself a lot after she started on them exclusively, and her coat is not as glossy.

NO!!! It would take a VERY VERY VERY VERY long time to do any damage to her with those ingredients unless she had an allergy! You're a terrific owner to notice her drinking, and to try to give her the best food you can!

ruby scratched a ton, rufus's coat got all dry and flaky. once i put them on regular raw ruby slowed down on her itching and rufus's coat got shiny and glossy again.. they didnt do well on the NV patties. some dogs do good on them, but people that i know that tried them their dogs didnt..
you are not killing her just put her on regular raw or back on kibble.

NOT AT ALL!

Maybe just switch back to the honest kitchen though?
