Am I feeding my puppy enough?

Postby fable » Tue Dec 08, 2009 11:32 am

Hi All,

I realize this topic has been covered, but I am getting conflicting info and would appreciate a personalized response.

Cuzco is a pit bull mutt, 8 months old and around 55 pounds. Twice a day, I feed him 1 cup of dry puppy food with 1/3 can of wet food.

I walk Cuzco for 20 minutes in the AM and 40 minutes in the PM and he has a huge yard to play in. His fur is thick and shiny, his ribs are not showing and he doesn't seem to have excess fat, I am assuming I am feeding him well?

Thanks so much!

Hi Misskiwi67,

I don't have the best pics of his whole body, but here we go:

This photo is when we first got him, his previous owner had neglected him so he looks a little slim.

He looks healthy, and maybe even a little bit too well fed lol

That's what I was thinking. lol
After their torso, leading into their hips should be a nice tuck.

Libby and CSilverman. Thanks so much for your feedback. When that first picture was taken, I actually was feeding him twice as much as I am now. I felt a little guilty since had had gone with out food or water for a long time due to neglect from the previous owner.

I believe he has a nice tuck now....my mission is to capture it, if Cuzco would just slow down! Maybe I can update this thread with photos.

Rule of thumb is if you rub your hands down his sides, you should be able to feel the ribs just a little bit without much pressure, but not really see them. It really depends, I like my APBT's on the thinner side.

Also, it really has to do with the dog. My personal dog, has a beautiful tuck, and is nothing but muscle. You can feel the ribs, but not see them. My foster however is SO high energy that no matter how much food and conditioning we are doing to her, you can still see the ribs.

I don't mind slightly more weight on a puppy, because they may go through a growth spurt and use up any extra they've got, but I do mean "SLIGHTLY" - too much can be damaging for growing joints and hearts of little ones!

Generally, if you rub the backs of your own knuckles together, that's what it should feel like to rub the backs of your knuckles along your dogs' ribs.
