Back from the first trip to the vet, opinions on meds please

Postby Fixedgearjerk » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:24 pm

Just got back from the first trip to the vet with my foster failure. SO happy to brag, he was an AWESOME patient!

He has been extremely itchy and displaying to styles of skin irritation, some areas where the fur had been "scratched" off and some welt like bumps he's fond of nibbling to itch. Doc prescribed Cephalexin, 500mg dose twice daily (1000g total) for 3 weeks and Temaril-P to be given in decreasing amounts... 3 tabs twice a day for 4 days, 1.5 tabs twice a day for 7 days and finishing the bottle at one tab twice daily. Anything I should be aware of or watch out for here? Cephalexin I understand will kill a skin infection if present. The Temaril-P I am completely in the dark with. I asked about it's steriod content and he said it does contain small amounts. Is this common practice? Both meds at the same time gonna be OK? Thanks for any opinions or advice!

IME it has been common practice. Cefalexin is an antibiotic that helps heal infection, and the temaril-p is used to a)battle inflamation and b)to relieve the itching.

Do you know why your dog is itchy? Allergies (environmental or food?)? If not, I would suggest going deeper to help prevent this from being a reoccurring theme for your dog.

The Doc's evaluation was the allergy is enviromental of some sort. I'm feeding strictly Evo Salmon and Herring, grain free. Had him look over the ingrediant list and his feeling was this isn't food related based on that being the only his ONLY food source at this point, no other treats etc. and the food had no strong potential allergens to his knowledge. Mind you I don't know this vet, this was first trip, first introduction.

After having gone through the allergy battle for the last 10 years, I would vote finding a skin specialist. My old dog had initially been "eyeballed" to have a food allergy... he then tested positive for dust and pollen and I will always believe grain was an issue as well. Glad you are grain free btw.

90% of allergies are environmental... if you play the odds, its environmental. Dogs who show allergy signs at less than a year of age are more likely to be food allergic.

Temaril-P is mostly an antihistamine, but it has low doses of steroids too... I usually just reach for the steroids if the itching is really that bad. The dosing/duration seems accurate for a 50 lb dog...

Do you have Meijer near you? It's like a super walmart. If you do, the Cephalexin is free there. And I just opened the capsules and put it directly on Bruno's food and he doesn't have any issues that way.

Cephalexin is an antibiotic and should not be used without doctor supervision. We have more than enough antibiotic resistance in the world, and with Doctors pointing the fingers at veterinarians (and trying to take meds away from us to save them for human use) these types of suggestions are a BAD idea.

He weighed in at 74 lbs today! Thats at least 10 lbs more than he was when I got him before Thanksgiving. He NEEDED the weight as he was emaciated when I grabbed him from the shelter. I'm happy with your comment about dosage, I'd rather give him a little less then he might need as opposed to over doing it and building tolerence. Is the Temaril-P something he "could" take forever? I don't want that at all, just curious as to its typical usage. I'm gonna start both meds with dinner tonight, hope it offers him some relief.

A skin specialst is my next move if this doesn't make a sizable change. It's just sad to watch the IMMENSE focus he has being broken to scratch and itch!

I meant for her to take the prescription that the vet wrote to the pharmacy there. That is what I did when Bruno was prescribed it and although it's a human pharmacy, they just put canine (or equine or feline or whatever species they are treating) into the profile so they knew it wasn't for a human. Meijer has a top ten prescribed antibiotics free program...that is all I meant by it.

Oh oh... sorry. Meijers sounds like a farm store we have here locally, but I've never been so its probably totally different. So sorry!! Just a little paranoid about antibiotic use...

Just to update the Temaril-P really helped him stop itching. Started Saturday night and he hasn't had a "fit" since. I'm hoping as we ween off the dosage the results will continue!
