So, yeah.

Postby Libby » Sat Jan 23, 2010 10:39 pm

I'm not really ready to talk about it, but I thought I should let everyone know. I took Hoss in to have x-rays taken, and we got so far as his shoulders and elbows, both sides. He has, for sure, advanced osteosarcoma in both elbows, and pretty bad arthritis in the left (the 'lame' leg). At that point it seemed kind of pointless to check out his hips too, since we were only going to look at his hips to see if they were ok enough to allow for amputating his left leg, but that isn't an option anymore.

So it wasn't nerve damage after all, its cancer.

The vet gave him six months. We upped his pain meds to gabapentin. So far it seems to be working better than the carprofen and tramadol were, he doesn't cry at night anyway. He's only been on it for a couple days, so I guess only time will tell.

I don't know how I feel about this. I'm in a state of disbelief right now, I think. I've been trying not to think about it, honestly.

I'm getting copies of the x-rays on Monday, I'll see about getting pictures up. They look completely different from Gypsy's. Well, aside from hers being hip x-rays and his being elbow, the cancer in Hoss's bones is obviously just that, cancer. The almost bubbly look near the joint and then how it progresses out into the limb.

Its just weird to me. Had that big scare with Gypsy just a little while ago, and now Hoss is diagnosed with the same thing.

Oh, Libby I'm so sorry. Hoss is blessed and lucky to have found you. He looks so happy in all his photos playing with his pals. His days are filled with joy.

I will send prayers for Big Hoss that his pain is manageable :pray We all love him so, I'm teary eyed.

 for you

Thank you, Patty.

I don't want anyone to be offended if I don't respond to this thread much. I'm not ready to talk about it and I'm going to try to think about it as little as possible, until I have no choice.

Might not be the best course of action, but I don't think I can face it yet.

Are you sure about the osteosarcoma in the elbows?? Bilateral elbows would be very unusual for osteosarcoma... granted, its a nasty cancer and it can do whatever it wants, but there is a saying "away from the elbow, towards the knee" for where osteosarcoma is most likely to grow.

Pain is pain and if his quality of life is rotten it won't make much difference anyway, I just thought it was REALLY odd to have osteosarc in one elbow, let alone both, so I thought it might be worth mentioning to have the x-rays viewed by a radiologist or orthopedic specialist if they haven't been already.

Oh Libby....I am so sorry to hear this

Hoss is SO lucky to have found you. He now has known love, that he may have never known before.

Is it possible to have someone else look at the X-rays like Misskiwi suggested? I'm hoping this isn't the same vet that you had the issue with reading x-rays wrong before.

We're all here for you.

Thanks, everyone.

I PM'ed MissKiwi to get a little more information, I'm going to see if I can find a specialist in Albuquerque to send the x-rays to.

I took Hoss to a different vet than I did Gypsy.
