HELP!! What is this?

Postby rokstrr » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:31 pm

Hey all! A friend of mine contacted me last night for my advice. She has a pit/boxer mix named Baxter. Baxter is an inside/outside dog. Meaning when they are at work during the day he is in the backyard. Well Baxter developed this sore on his chin. It has progressively gotten worse and is now bigger and is and bloody. i told her he has some sort of infection and needs to be seen by a vet. Looks to me like he maybe got bit by something. Any vets out there have any idea what this might be? Any suggestions?

Thank you!

I think you already gave your friend the right advice. It looks infected, and Baxter should go to the vet. It could be a staph infection, but at any rate, it needs veterinary treatment.

not a vet by any means, but I'll make a guess.

Looks like it is an infection of some sort possibly started from a reaction to possibly plastic :dunno:

Definitely vet visit in order.

That was going to be my guess, I would take him to the vet asap for some antibiotics, and see if his bowls could be the issue. Some dogs have chronic acne, but that looks like it may need treatment.

Why do you say plastic? Is that a common chin irritant??

Yes. That is why a lot of people recommend not using plastic food and water dishes.

Huh?!
Well, I've never had that issue (good for the kids I guess) but we use stainless. I just like how they clean so well.
The bassets used to have plastic and no matter what they ALWAYS smelled and stained.

I've heard it is pretty common for dogs and cats to have a plastic reaction. Usually it is the bowls and they start getting bumps like acne(I think it actually has a name)

Sometimes plastic toys have that effect too :dunno:

our boxers always got that, I noticed that when they ate because of the position of their chins in relation to the top jaw it made alot more contact with the bowls and ground when snorting around. Like Shelly said when we used plastic dishes it got worse. Not sure why but when we switched him to raw and used metal dishes the rash, acne went away.
