Why do dogs eat grass?

Postby brunomom » Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:22 pm

I know I have heard this once before but I can't remember if it's a good thing like digestion help or a bad sign like an upset stomach...

because it tastes good. Lots of dogs turn vegetarian this time of year, with fresh spring grass to munch on.

Joe, the new puppy has to be told not to eat grass, he gets distracted and won't go potty...

Tristan loves to sample the grass here.
He never pukes because of it.

Both of my dogs occasionally munch on some grass and neither has ever puked from it.

My dogs have "leave it grass" and "eat grass" commands. Not that I'm insisting they eat grass, but they'd spend the whole walk grazing.

all of mine love grass . . . doc is the only one who eats it til he pukes though. my guess is that it gets stuck in his throat and makes him gag.

Oscar and Liberty are both casual grazers. To be more clear, Oscar grazes, and Liberty must do whatever Oscar's doing, so she rushes over, stares at where he's grazing, and then eats too, with a puzzled look on her face.

That's ingenious... I think I'll have to teach ours that...

I have part dogs, part cows. Cole is hilarious because he's a very picky grass eater. He spends most of his time with his nose pressed down on the ground snuffling around for the best smelling grass, gently tears up the pieces he wants, chews them, and then repeats. There's one section of the yard that doesn't have to be mown because it's his favorite grassy area.

Briar dug a bare spot in the middle of the yard once, and I tried to transplant grass so it'd spread over the dirt faster and she just kept eating it, roots and dirt completely.

My dogs eat a TON of "salad" too. With the rain and warm weather we've had here lately, they are in HEAVEN!
