Needle aspiration cost

Postby Siberian » Tue Apr 27, 2010 5:28 pm

Has anyone had to do that for their dogs? I have an appointment this Saturday, but they won't give me a cost. I just want to know what I need to be prepared for financially.

Suzi, they won't give me the cost (as I mentioned above...)

I am aware of the cost differences, but if I hear others, I can have an idea of the range for my area.

What's their reason for not telling you the cost? That would make me extremely uncomfortable...

The woman who makes appointments said the doctor would give me a cost, and I would decide to go through with it or not at the appointment...

On the other hand, if it is too much and I say "no", I will be out of $50 for an appointment fee... Ok, I don't like that. I am gonna call another vet.

Called two more vets that I have gone to before. One place would not give me an estimate either, saying that the doctor would have to look at it first.

And the third one was $47 for the test itself. Plus appointment fee of course. I made an appointment there.

I would have done the same. Telling you a test is needed but not being willing to tell you how much the test is until you've paid another fee is shady at best.

Good luck with the test!

Full exam: 42.50
Brief exam (for dogs who come to the clinic every other week and have one brief health issue, its a cop-out exam fee for us suckers): 30.50
FNA without cytology: 24.50 (for cysts that are 100% diagnosed without microscopic analysis, less than 10% of FNA's)
FNA with cytology: 44.00

Our clinic is fairly competitive price-wise, so I wouldn't be surprised to see charges 20-50% higher than this depending on your area.

I guess our vet is cheaper: she does a fine needle aspiration with cytology for $30 (or $25 for Tiva, who needs all her lumps checked constantly to make sure her MCT hasn't come back).
