Dog Ate Menthol Cough Drops

Postby Cherry » Wed Aug 18, 2010 7:18 pm

OMG. I was mowing the yard and I guess Cherry decided she was going to drag my purse off the counter and eat the rest of a bag of cough drops that was in there. They are Halls Menthol-Eucalyptus brand, the tropical citrus. Each cough drop has 3.1mg of menthol. Other ingredients include glucose syrup and sucrose. There was about 15-20 left. And of course she ate all the wrappers too.

She has an iron stomach (she's eaten all kinds of inanimate objects) but never has eaten anything that is potentially toxic. Sigh. I really hope she's going to be ok. I'm going to try and induce vomiting. Doesn't usually work with her though. :(

Anyone know how dangerous this is?

She didn't throw up with 1 tbsp of peroxide. Thinking about giving her one more...

It took about 1/4 cup or 8 TBSP for a 90 lb Bassset, maybe more.

Eh, I wouldn't have bothered. lol Tully has gotten into cough drops before, it doesn't do them any harm. Maybe some diarrhea.

^I'm a really paranoid mommy LOL. With her iron stomach, she would've been fine, I'm sure. But I didn't wanna take the chance.

Last night she turned down a treat. Which is literally the 1st time in her life she did that. So I know her tummy was upset. (This was after the barfing) She slept long and hard last night but was her normal, goofy self this morning. I'm expecting some soft poo later today. Knowing her it'll be pretty poops like usual though. Damn dog has a tummy of steel.

Haley once got into 2 different full bags of those (after eating several spring onion stems I dumbly left where she could reach- her mouth was probably hot I guess), the citrus and the blue "super-menthol" ones... she apparently decided halfway through the bag of blue ones that they really weren't all that good, so crunched several of them up all over my bed, sticky, sticky! No ill effects, and she's got a pretty delicate digestive system lol . I think some of them also have pectin, which I would speculate would help with the digestive aspect of it. Maybe.
