Anyway to increase Red Blood Cell counts...

Postby patty » Thu Aug 19, 2010 7:29 pm

My girl Amber has autoimmune disease (AIHA). Our vet has indicated that a blood transfusion(s) would be the only treatment for her. The success rate for those are very low. She is 13 and very frail. Her appetite is very good if we hand feed her. Her urine and fecal tests are normal, no temperature or infections. She is disoriented know, probably due to lack of oxygen not being created.

I know I'm grasping, but is there any other way to increase her Red Blood Cell count? Any food ideas? Any thoughts are appreciated.

If you could say a little prayer for her, I would be grateful.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Hugs and prayers for your baby! I'm not sure what will help, but you may want to try to get in touch with a holistic vet.

Thank you Patchs, Yvette and Sharon. It means alot to me.

I have ordered the Red Cell overnight, I want to start as soon as possible. I am on borrowed time now.

I took a huge chance yesterday taking her to a new vet that specializes in cancer. She gets very stressed out and it was very hot. They were very kind to meet me at the SUV with a stretcher for her. Such a good girl she would stand to greet every person she saw with a tail way and a kiss. It definitely wore her out, she is stumbling today. Now I second guess myself that I should not have done that.

I wanted another opinion, since the low dose of pred was not seeming to help her rebound. I wanted another blood test to get a platlet count, but the vet was nervous. Saying it could cause her to "crash". So in my heart of hearts I know that was most likely her last car ride until time to say goodbye.

I called the new vet this evening about uping the pred dosage and she wouldn't give me a prescription without doing the tests and x-rays that she warned me might be too much for her. She is afraid of internal bleeding or heart disease. So now do I take the risk? Or accept the fact Amber has had a good life full of love.

After my chemo, I was anemic and lethargic. I was given Procrit shots to increase my RBC. Is this available for dogs?

Aw Patty I can't say...do what your heart is telling you to do.
Remember it is ultimately their comfort and not our own pain of impending loss that should be the motivation in either scenario...
We are here for you

Yeah, Love HURTS :crybaby:

We will try the Red Cell. In the meantime I also have to get several non-slip area rugs for the most travelled paths in the house or booties with traction for Amber. We have polished concrete floors throughout the house and watching her slip and slide is heartbreaking. The floors were great and easy to keep clean having 3 dogs, but now not so great.

Right now she is only on Prednisone, 60 mg per day (30 mg in the morning, 30 mg at night) for 3 months.

I have also been giving her Pet Tinic twice aday, Vitamin K, NutriCal, Salmon Oil

Should I fear her crashing doing a blood draw?

Thank you Dee for lighting a candle for Amber.

Amber is really struggling this morning. I will contact everyone today that you and Sharon have recommended.

I asked her to hold on a little longer. I know she will try, but in my heart I know she also wants to rest now.

You can also buy Red Cell at a feed store where they sell horse supplies if you have a feed store in your area?? Just cut the dose back from horse measurements(You cna probably get the dog dose on the link Msvette gave you?)

Amber, I am praying for your strength baby girl
