Joint Supplements

Postby PitBull-Lady » Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:27 pm

I've been saying for a while now that I'll just give human supplements to our older dog, but then I think well, maybe I should not... they do make dog ones for a reason right?

Jasmine is 11 and before we got her apparently she had trauma to her front leg so she does not limp after 1-2 mile walks.
Please educate me on joint supplements and what you recommend. I realize they are not miracle drugs but I thought it would be good to help her along.

I love the Glyco-Flex series of products. Franny was having some elbow problems and we put her on Level 3 during her rehab. She's back to her old self.

Veterinary supplements are the best - FDA regulated for many of them, also more expensive.
Human products are next - not FDA regulated
OTC pet products are likely the worst - not regulated, no repercussions if found to be improperly made...

We use human grade glucosimine for our girls as per recommended by their vet. The only catch is that for dogs you need the glucosimine HCL, NOT sulfate as apparently it doesn't metabolize the same way. We just buy whatever is cheapest in the 500 mg pills. Currently costco seems to have the best prices and they always have the HCL in stock, sometimes you just have to ask at the pharmacy counter other places to get the right stuff.

I give Khan Osteo Bi-Flex triple strength. That is what my vet recommended.

Ditto. This is the one we use most often at work.

I personally use the UBA Vet Power Meg since it has joint supplement and omega fatty acids all in one conveinient bottle.

X2 on the Glycoflex. It really helps Roscoe with his elbow dysplasia, and I've noticed a big difference with Susie, our older "malamutt", she's been much more lively on walks and in general.

I use a human grade supplement for Moira. I chose it based on ingredients and price. It's the Rite Aid brand, and it contains glucosamine HCl, chondroitin, and MSM. Their store brand usually does pretty well on the Consumer Reports tests (I'd like to post the link but you have to be a subscriber to view it.) for actually containing what they say they do. I also use their fish oil for the dogs and their multivitamin for myself.

I usually use Dasuquin, which is a veterinary brand (also Welactin Omega 3 fatty acid supplement for help with arthritis relief as well), but a little while ago I impulse purchased some GNCPets Ultra Mega Hip & Joint tablets for Luce. I wasn't expecting to see any real difference one way or the other, to be honest, but after a couple months on the new stuff, I do see an improvement.

I use the GlycoFlex III for Kaiser and he does great. I know it was that because I quit giving it to him for a while and he was doing really bad.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the information. Especially the info about veterinary vs. catalog. I did not realize that they would be so different. Thanks Miss Kiwi!

Which do you recommend for sensitive tummies? Blu seems unable to handle even 1,000mg fish oil but now I found out he has arthritis in his knee and want to start joint supplements asap.
