TOTW.. No More Venison?!

Postby Haileys_Saviour » Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:29 pm

I picked up a bag of TOTW High Prairie for Hailey today and being curious, read the back. Venison is no longer the second ingredient. Its now the 10th ingredient.

I'm a bit disappointed, I'll admit. Does this lower the overall quality of the food?

Didn't notice I can edit now! :curtsy:

I found this in a review on Amazon, there is some info about the change:

The guy wrote to the company and got this reply back:

"Dear Eric,

Thank you for your inquiry. I'm glad that your puppy has been doing so well on the Taste of the Wild High Prairie. The formula had to be changed because an adequate supply of quality venison was not available. The change is relatively minor with the venison being replaced with bison, already a part of the recipe. I would not expect you to notice a difference with your puppy. However, if you still have some of the food in the previous bag, I would mix the food from both bags for a few days to avoid any potential issues. If you do not have any food from the previous bag, you could add some plain nonfat yogurt to your puppy's diet for a few days to help prevent any issues. I usually recommend 1 tablespoon per 25 pounds body weight.

Sincerely,
--
Melissa Brookshire, DVM"

Yeah, I believe a few dog food companies that had/have venison formulas have either reduced or suspended those formulas right now because of a lowered supply.

Out here in BC its elk and llama, and soon bison.
bison has seen a 40% increase in price over the last yr, and so now the elk supply is being taxed. Llama is the "new" novel protein and becoming popular, thus harder to get.
Venison never seems to have a supply issue here.

Note this is based on raw food providers and butchers/slaughterhouses here.

Why is venison suddenly hard to get?

That's kind of what I was wondering to. I know a lot of people that hunt and during season this winter all of them got at least 1 deer and it's not like they were hunting non stop. Plus I work in a city that has tons of deer and we have had 3 or 4 get hit by cars in the last week or so.

And surely the venison in pet food is farm raised or some such, right? It's very odd.

I hope it doesn't affect my cat's sweet pea and venison food, I have an IBD cat and it's about all she can tolerate.

I guess they added 'more bison' instead.

I'm also curious why venison is harder to get.

Hailey still chows down like nothing changed though.. she actually prefers
TOTW to Innova EVO Red Meat
