OFA X-ray prices?

Postby Celesteandthebullies » Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:17 pm

Hello everyone,

I called my local vet and asked how much it would cost to take hip and elbow X-rays to send off to the OFA. The receptionist said she thinks they only do hips, and she gave me an estimated price of around $350 for getting the hip x-ray, and then OFA registry prices.

Is that a normal price? How much did you have to pay?

I paid about $100 for hip xray and sedation for Jersey, I didn't send them off to OFA though.

Ive never had OFA xrays done but it cost me about $300 to have my cats paw xrayed once. Xrays are pricey, the price your vet quoted you isnt OFA's price, its the vet's price. So you can shop around. To actually send the xrays in and be evaluated is only like 40 bucks.

I called up another local veterinary, and they said they'd charge about $310 for both hips and elbows, and she said the registry fee is about $40. ( So you are likely right on that.)

I thinking getting him checked out prior to anything strenuous is great, but why OFA? He's not a breeding animal, or even a purebred that could bolster a rep of a breeder. A gen practice vet could tell you whether or not he is sound to work.

I agree with redgrrl... OFA is for breeding purposes.

Hip rads without sedation would run you $138 at my clinic, plus the $40 exam.

He dun gotz no balls...So dun wrry boot dat. ;)

(Not that I think you were suggesting that.)

And thank you for the advice, that would save me $40. Vets around here are not cheap. :/ Those are the cheapest local vets, the other vet in our town (closest one) charges a $150 walk in fee after 12:00 :wow

I'm just a bit paranoid about local vets, since the one my family used (the huge walk in fee vet) wasn't a good one. They've done things, that made me wonder why my grandmother didn't sue them, and overall were really rude.

Misskiwi67, what do you think of VCA veterinary offices?

We've been going to VCA Ashers since I got Dakota, they've been really helpful, and kind so far.

I'd keep the 40 bucks for a trial registration fee. :D

.....Why do I always miss these things?.....Why can't I have that same ability to see things in front of my face like in dog training, in the normal world? lol

Have you looked to see if they are hosting any OFA clinics in your area? There's an upcoming clinics calendar at the OFA site http://www.offa.org and you may be able to save some money that way. I submitted Xanny's, as I was planning to breed her, but I knew I wasn't breeding Soleil, so I just had my own vet evaluate her x-ray.

All my dogs that are pulling were $350.00 plus the OFA fees and I am talking about hips only, since for elbows and knees I went to an orthopedic specialist for an opinion (cardiac with cardiologist). Not letting a regular vet decided whether or not my dogs structure is good enough to work, but that is just me.As far as I know and from what i have been told on the phone, there is a particular process followed to grade hips, and it is not based on one single radiologist opinion only.To submit x rays to OFA will most likely be my choice for dogs in the future as well. With OFA I can also have my records available to the public, especially for the usual "rescue dogs are all crippled and built like crap" crowd or someone interested in adopting the occasional foster dog I have, to do sport.

Thank you for your input Red. That's sort of how I felt about vets.
Since I would really like to get really active in weight pulling with Dakota, I will likely go with OFA, just to feel more secure. I am paying for it with my money, so what the hay.I'm not going to have him pull more than I am now until I get that done, he's 2 months from the 24 mark so I'll have some extra time to save as well.

Honestly, the OFA fees are not the issues, compared to what we get charged in CA for x rays under sedation. My foster has her preliminary done by OFA and I should re check her as an adult but jeez.... the prices here are crazy.

Don't you love CA?
We got charged $450 to get a fox tail removed, cheapest in town.
