LIMPING

Postby Chasesmom » Wed Jun 08, 2011 11:14 am

Chase is limping pretty bad. Started yesterday and I didn't see anything happen to cause it. We don't see any cuts, marks, or scuffs on his pads.
I gave him some pain pills and they didn't even seem to phase him. He drags his back leg and isn't putting any weight on it when he stands. :(

I swear, ever since he got that limp tail from the river, he has been so touchy about his back legs and now this. Bah. If it doesn't go away in a few days we are going to have to bring him to the vet but I can't imagine what they will tell us that we don't already know. He's in pain, that's obvious. Unless they do some x-rays or something, I'm not sure they will find anything.

What should we do?

if he is that lame, i'd seriously consider a vet visit sooner rather than later.

poor guy :(

I would suspect a partial or torn curciate ligament, although I hope it isn't

Okay, making an appointment. It's not getting better. I'd say worse. He is practically hopping on 3 legs now. So I dunno because he can still lift it up and it is not just stuck dragging. That's got to be good, right?

But he was up all night tossing around and he kept getting on the bed near us and trying to sleep but couldn't get comfortable. Poor guy. :(

If he's not toe-touching, I would expect a more severe injury (or at least more painful) than a torn cruciate.

Okay, so we took him to the vet yesterday. The vet tried to get a good look at his leg but Chase was NOT having it. He snapped at him and growled with teeth showing and all. He was not a happy camper. The vet loves Chase and thinks he is great, happy, and friendly and he said that Chase is definitely acting like a different dog. I have to agree.

He said it's obvious he is in a lot of pain as he is shaking and aggressive when that area is touched. He fears that it is a torn acl but he said he really hopes that he is wrong. He wanted to go with the cheapest, least aggressive method to start out so he put Chase on a 10 day pain pill/anti-inflammatory regimen and basically bed rest to see if the problem fixes itself. He said obviously if it gets worse within that time or his eating/drinking habits change then to call him immediately.
After that if it isn't better, we will have him sedated and he is going to look for the drawer sign (right?) and then we will go from there.
He said his dog just went through it and had surgery. Very expensive and very time consuming. He also said that once one goes out, the next usually follows within a year :(

PERFECT TIMING. We're trying to save up for getting out of the military and a new baby and then this. :crybaby:

Is he doing better with the pain medications?

ACL's are usually this painful, but I guess it could be if he didn't find anything else...
